New logo: Explanations 💜

After the announcement of the new logo and the new identity of Deezer, we took the time to read all your comments and feedback in order to address your concerns and understand your feelings

Opinions are very divided and several details were pointed out, including one that came up quite often: Why did you choose a heart 💜?
One comment cited there is a more distant connection to music compared to the old logo

The beating purple heart simply represents love and passion for music. The shapes of the logo vary to signify musical rhythms. Its movement and pulsing quality directly reflect the essence of music and the human response to the listening experience, much like a heartbeat.

Another question was “why did you decide to change everything/what is the purpose of this new identity?”

Deezer helps you “be and belong,” going beyond streaming to empower fans, artists and partners to express themselves and connect through our products and services.

Refreshing our visual identity is essential as we enter this new era for Deezer. This allows us to connect emotionally with music fans, artists and strategists through visual cues that let people know that with Deezer they can experience music, not just listen to it.

The choice to have prioritised this change was not the best, it would have been good to strengthen the user experience rather than degrade it.

Satisfying our users experience is indeed crucial. Development and modification choices can be complex, which means that the change itself was so significant that some bugs crept in during this transition. All have been flagged by our developers and technicians, who are already fixing these errors.

The identity change will be present in all future app updates. We hope you will adopt the new design and enjoy the new Deezer experience.

We adopt this new identity with pride, and although not everyone likes it yet, we still hope to find a place in your hearts 💜.

Long-time user of a Deezer Family account. Always took time and effort to explain to Spotify-users why Deezer was be a great alternative. No need to do so anymore. I will switch to Spotify. There is a max to the level of uglyness I can bear several times a day. Sad that presumably sane people have decided that this was the way to go.

Companies like Deezer only consider user feedbacks when people stop giving $$$. I am sure they don’t care about the current discussions about their new disaster.

I will switch from Deezer if this design and the dumb purple hue don't change.

It’s so ugly I started playing with the underlying .css. This is where the dreadful purple, magenta stuff is located. They called the theme “Chakra” internally. I’m reaching the point where I’m wondering whether I should not write a Chrome extension to overwrite their stuff, I would not be surprised if some people with more time than me are already working on this...

My chakra broke the first time I saw this purple.

I registered mainly to come and complain about this look. I’ve been paying for Deezer for years, but would have never registered if the product had this look back in the day. It looks derivative, as if an executive had said “we need something more like TikTok” and the design delivered.

The heart logo is the worst part.

If it was only the logo I could live with it. But the whole interface is botched and does not look professional. I am not a freaking 14 yo Fortnite player.

More than twice as old as that and never played Fortnite in my life, and don’t really see any problem with that. In my opinion a grown ass man should not be bothered by likeness to something like that as long as it makes sense design-wise. I do not get this Fortnite reference because I never cared for it and, sincerely and with no offense intended, neither should you if you are not into that game.

I get the argument that huge headers waste screen space and it’s painful for users with smaller devices, I give you that. And I heard some reports on removed features but two days into using it I have not missed anything yet (but everyone has their own use case). And for the rest - I like the contrast of dark background and purple, so it does look good for me and I honestly don’t get why people are flipping out so much on something that insignificant. e.g. if it was orange instead I would like it much less but whatever man, it’s just a color scheme.

And for the icon, the “it looks like a gay dating app” argument reeks of insecurity. It’s a fucking mix between the “now playing” animation you get when playing a track and a heart icon that appears when you favorite an album or a track. Actually a neat damn idea. Being mad about it gives off  “14yo Fortnite player” vibes much more than the font :D

Again, maybe I am still traumatized by the stuff forced on the Spotify users where the new UX became actively disruptive and predatory towards paying users (forcing podcasts, loud autoplay for more engagement, half-baked hybrid of desktop and mobile layouts, bugs and bugs and bugs and so on). In comparison, this update really seems like nothing more than a fresh coat of paint without changing user experience interaction-wise. Even if it’s not your cup of tea in terms of colors and design language, it’s absolutely not worth the drama.

This is most probably the worst app design change EVER in the history of online services.

A can not tell what is worst - the logo itself, chosen color or the new “Fortnite” font. OMG, this is very very bad and it completely ruined the user experience in deed.

Userlevel 1

Oh, I just found out that it is not even possible to EDIT my response here. So, I apologize for the typos and mistakes in my previous text :)

I took a look at Koto Studio, the firm that designed the new logo and color scheme. I like most of what they did. I like the purple favorite hearts. I like what they did for Amazon’s Amp (which is dying), Bolt, Backmarket and even Venmo. What I don’t like, like most commentators here, is having the purple heart be the primary Deezer logo. Hearts are used by hospitals, pharmacies, fitness and dating apps. Deezer had something unique - EQ bars. They should have tried harder to retain that element in the new logo, or pivot to another music-related image like headphones or a speaker. The heart is a mistake. In less than 5 years, it will be dropped. And only a few loyal subscribers will be around to say ‘I told you so.’

Each to their own - if you like the redesign good for you, but Deezer asked for feedback from users about the new look, unfortunately for them it's largely negative

I think this tweet explains it all. They're gonna cherry pick and listen to the good stuffs. They spent so much on the new design and I think they're not gonna undo everything just because we don't like it

Fair enough, my rant was not intended to invalidate the concerns of people here but rather asking people to chill before posting and not to overblow the issue. Sure someone may dislike the new color scheme and thats perfectly fine, but I’ve been reading the forum for two days already and it sounds like some people are personally and mortally offended by it, and that baffles me.

What really sucks tho is that Deezers forum seems to be a in a state where it is barren enough to feel that their staff is not really present here unless to make a news post, yet enough people know about it to come in and complain as soon as something goes wrong. People who are ok with Deezer don’t bother with the forum, why would they if its not really active?

That sounds likely. We can always vote with our wallets though.

Who on their right mind approved this UI? This UI is terrible..  the logo is a mess. The font looks like their squashed pls undo this.. Its actually ruining my experience.

So I wrote an email to Deezer about their terrible new design and interface and asked can we have an option to have the old one. I also pointed out the number of complaints on the forum about this abomination. Their “reply”:

We've made a strategic shift towards a new brand purpose; 'Deezer helps you be and belong'  going beyond streaming to give fans, artists, and partners the means to express themselves and connect through our products and services.

Refreshing our visual identity is essential as we enter this new age for Deezer. It allows us to connect emotionally with music fans and artists.

The new vision for Deezer is to create an experience services platform around all things music, where we give people opportunities to express themselves and to connect with others.

Matching the brand new direction, Deezer is also introducing an enhanced user experience and design in the app, to inspire and empower music fans to “Live the music” through personalised experiences.

This includes features like FLOW and Music Quiz and the upcoming Shaker, which give people a chance to express their moods through music and connect with their friends, even outside of the Deezer product, around music.

If you have installed automatic app updates on your mobile, you can enjoy the new version since its official release on Tuesday, 7th November at 7.30 pm CEST. If you don’t have automatic app updates enabled, you will have to visit your app store and update the Deezer app manually.

We hope you will embrace the new visual and enjoy the newest Deezer experiences.

You can keep up to date with all things Deezer by Visiting our community

their second reply about how they can ignore customers who pay so much and that they will possible leave:

We have to remain with the reply given here. I apologise for any inconvenience this is causing you.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

I don’t love the redesign, but what is the real slap in the face is the lack of addressing technical issues for a facelift.
There are posts regarding the same issues for YEARS for example  “An error has occurred, please try again”

I pay for a service to play music, not be interrupted by tech issues multiple times a day.

So just a typical corpo mumbo jumbo. Time to look for alternatives!

you guys are really mad because of a logo? lol

Deezer is the band playing on the ship deck when it sinks after hitting the iceberg. Got the same mumbo jumbo from giving a rating on Google play. The answers seems to be coming from a chat robot, out of touch with reality😭

I was shocked and disturbed this morning when I woke up and looked at my phone and all of my beautiful rainbow bar Deezer playlists are now a giant blur of purple crap on the bottom half of my phone screen. I've been themeing my phone in beautiful rainbow colors around those Deezer icons that used to be there ever since I've signed up for the account. I loved the rainbow bar icon. I hate the giant purple smear that it is now. I can't find where to change this in my phone. I'm on an older version of android and I just want the rainbow bars icon back, please! This looks TERRIBLE!

HELP, please.

Seriously this made me depressed. I'm mostly likely gonna cancel. It's been a good 8 years. YouTube premium here I come..

Oh dear, what a load of 💩

I don't care Deezer, what I want is to pay to stream music without the corporate branding offending my eyes.

I don't want a quiz, or an 'experience' or to connect emotionally.

Other than Flow, you can keep the rest of the  garbage that you have decided to come up with - stick it all on a different tier of membership and see how many people choose it.

Userlevel 1

AGREED!!!! What, am I a 12 year-old girl? The entire world is becoming a giant-pansy-ass-bitch. Sigh. Ya, I’m not going to keep a giant purple heart on my screen. Hell, let’s make it a rainbow! Deezer folks, you’re idots.

Dear Deezer, Has the Barbie movie influenced your “logo » because that’s what it looks like to me, very girly. I prefer the previous logo. Sorry.

Version 8.0.0.4 is horrible.
