New logo: Explanations đź’ś

After the announcement of the new logo and the new identity of Deezer, we took the time to read all your comments and feedback in order to address your concerns and understand your feelings

Opinions are very divided and several details were pointed out, including one that came up quite often: Why did you choose a heart đź’ś?
One comment cited “there is a more distant connection to music compared to the old logo”

The beating purple heart simply represents love and passion for music. The shapes of the logo vary to signify musical rhythms. Its movement and pulsing quality directly reflect the essence of music and the human response to the listening experience, much like a heartbeat.

Another question was “why did you decide to change everything/what is the purpose of this new identity?”

Deezer helps you “be and belong,” going beyond streaming to empower fans, artists and partners to express themselves and connect through our products and services.

Refreshing our visual identity is essential as we enter this new era for Deezer. This allows us to connect emotionally with music fans, artists and strategists through visual cues that let people know that with Deezer they can experience music, not just listen to it.

“The choice to have prioritised this change was not the best, it would have been good to strengthen the user experience rather than degrade it.”

Satisfying our users experience is indeed crucial. Development and modification choices can be complex, which means that the change itself was so significant that some bugs crept in during this transition. All have been flagged by our developers and technicians, who are already fixing these errors.

The identity change will be present in all future app updates. We hope you will adopt the new design and enjoy the new Deezer experience.

We adopt this new identity with pride, and although not everyone likes it yet, we still hope to find a place in your hearts đź’ś.

Hi.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Deezer. It's my go to choice for music, however deezer's new UI is truly a crime against humanity.

Please, deezer devs make a switch in the app that allows users to choose between the new and the old UI.

New logo doesn't represents and identify me, you should let people choose, at least the color. Now I have to move the app because it looks awful in my principal display. Really considering now to cancel it and get Spotify.

Userlevel 4

I don 't like your new design . can I switch to the old one?

Userlevel 3

It really is bad. And rather than adding new things, they took stuff away! You can't see the album release date anymore by swiping the album cover. Instead it just makes the album cover slightly smaller… wtf is even the point??

My opinions about the new design:

  1. The new font of the title is horrible, it looks like a children's app or a Halloween edition;

  2. Logo looks like a dating app and the design is an aberration, on PC I can't see the details very well and the animation when starting up looks like a bat;

  3. The user interface is ok on Android, but it has problems, the Favorites tab shows three songs from my Favorites, but I prefer to see my Playlists first to Favorites (if possible, create an option to change the order of this);

  4. The UI and UX on Windows app doesn't work properly;

    Home UI

Red Section: No longer slides the name of the song or the artists.
Blue Section: Sometimes it doesn't show the playlists, just to create them and could have an option to change the size of the covers or remove them (like on Spotify).
Yellow Section: It could be resizable (like in Spotify) and remove the Favorites and Downloads shortcuts (this could only stay in the Playlists section) and add the search shortcut in their place.

    Similar Artists UI

Has A lot of space on the final of covers.

    Oficial Deezer Playlists

Now Deezer playlist covers are ugly and very weird.

  5. All the bugs that have already been reported are still present in this new version, including some are UI issues, like these buttons.

This buttons never worked on Windows App.

The logo is the worst. i had to change it in my app drawer to just something else because i do not like looking at the purple heart there everytime i scroll through apps. i thought the old logo was fine and got the job done.

Hope this feedback will get to the product team.
As a product designer, need to admit - my favorite app looks awful now, starting with logo, fonts (some styles are missing in other languages), mess with the icons (different line width and proportions). Previous coral color was much better than new purple (distracting eyes). All UI elements are bigger - no free space left. UI is too crowded.

Think it’s  time to fire your design lead. Please bring back old version or make toggle to switch.

Wow. What a dismissive and, frankly, condescending answer. You've not addressed any of the legitimate concerns your users have (the app being harder to use, less legible).

The new redesign; yes its horrible.

What really pisses me off, is that so far I have seen 0 reaction of ANY Deezer staff to the (valid) complaints of the UI redesign and loss of functionality on some parts as well.

Let me remind you, Deezer:

I myself, and many other pay good money for your service. We are active, paying users.

Not adressing the valid complaints of an already established and paying customer base is just wrong.

By now I expected at least one of two things happening:

  1. An apology and acknowledgement of the fact you messed up and will fix it.
  2. A message stating you stand by it and anyone that doesnt like it is free to leave.

I certainly hope you got the balls to do one of these moves.

If you gonna go for option 3 (just stay silent and hope people will “forget and accept” ,

I will not be renewing my subscription for sure.

No one, literally NO ONE asked for a professional company with professional logo to “reinvent” their identity.

Your new logo looks like a gay dating app, the font is straight up ripped from Fortnite, the color scheme stolen from Twitch and your artwork is of the same cheap wannabe quirky and “inclusive” drawings/images are on the level of YoutTube/Dating app bad.

FRIENDLY REMINDER DEEZER:

I pay for MUSIC, not to feed an agenda, personal satisfaction of some UI designer or a power trip of some CEO that lost all touch with what made people choose Deezer in the first place.

How to fix this?

Can’t go on a rant without offering a legit solution in my opinion.

1.revert changes,  make this “theme” optional

2.send out a questionare to your active userbase with a simple yes/no question: does Deezer need the new UI/Identity change

3.ask people what they REALLY want to see improved, and start DOING IT.

i have seen a ton of legit suggestions/implementations that can make Deezer the best out there.

long story short:

Waiting for an official reply and any sign of some staff member that they give a f about their (paying) users.

If not seriously addressed I know one thing for sure, I wont be giving Deezer my money when my subscribtion ends. there are (cheaper) alternatives and the differences between the competetion and Deezer gets smaller everytime; hell the competition has an edge now since they don’t have such a horrendous UI.

I’m sorry, but the new logo is awful. Does not represent a music app, but looks like a dating app for a specific demographic. Please let us choose which logo to use.

It really is bad. And rather than adding new things, they took stuff away! You can't see the album release date anymore by swiping the album cover. Instead it just makes the album cover slightly smaller… wtf is even the point??

Yep, It is completely undesirable from a User Experience standpoint. Giving the user more features is not a bad thing, taking stuff away from customers / users is bad.

Userlevel 2

I agree. The new logo looks awful, the old one was much nicer. Why not let us choose?

Enough said. So far 86% of people voting hate the look. Tell me again about mixed opinions?

Userlevel 4

You did not “addressed our concerns or understand our feelings”, you just dismissed them. The logo being a heart makes NO SENSE for a music app, and most people here agree. Such a shame you’re being this way about so clear feedback.

Userlevel 3

This is not the explanation, this is copy-paste from your design presentation. You've ruined the app, now you are ruining communication.

Just stop and listen to people a bit, until it's too late.

Colors are ugly, the font is ugly, the logo is ugly, the very idea of “be and belong” is just a plain nonsense. This makes no sense.

Whoever did this to Deezer is working for Spotify, nothing else could explain this disaster.

Userlevel 1

The icon looks more like a dating app.

I do not understand how they could ruin such an exclusive look Deezer had before, it was more about rainbow colors, now looks like basic and childish. What a shame.

I do hope they introduce an option to enable the old UI or, at least, they switch partially back.

Just made a similar topic, its really not well executed. The look is just wrong, feels half-baked. Plus like @EricP said, a lot of functionality got worse. I don’t like the player buttons, this weird bubbly stuff really looks a bit childish, and that whilst the industry is moving to a more clean design (Google with Material You, and Apple realy going for tha frosted look again). I’d love Deezer to reconsider and give users more choice. Keep this the default if you want it to be the look for most users, but at least give use the option in settings. I’d love a monet toggle on android.

Also my friend thought it was some funky dating app with the new icon.

Thanks for the clarification, my subscription is now cancelled

Goodbye Deezer

Hello everyone,

For me, the first association when look at the new Deezer logo is that application is made for dating and to find love through social network… That is just awful, and I hope they will change it as soon as possible… Really disappointing…

Best regards

I’ve been a user for over 15 years. I have never participated in a forum before, even in the years when the algorithm went crazy and recommended pure commercial BS.
This new visual identity is so poor that I felt the need of joining to give my feedback. I am glad other people are also pointing it out. Get rid of the cheap heart. It makes no sense to completely kill the identity. It is not possible that an executive looked into this and thought it was a great idea, unless the designer is a part of his family.

PLEASE GIVE US THE UI WE LOVED BACK!!!

The UI was great! The logo was great!

Best UI and most spot on logo in the music streaming business. Combined with a wast hifi quality collection, you wiped the floor with Spotify, Qobuz, and of course all the shitty streaming services by big players from entirely other markets, who wants to get on the waggon..

But this....?

This is not a move in your favour..

Please, roll back this update!

Or at least give us the opportunity to choose..

Best regards

agreed. just kind of strange like it doesnt fit with everything else i have. maybe thats what they were going for but its like purple heart to me. i thought the old one was fine why did they change?

Exactly as paetkaa says, I migrated from Spotify to Deezer specifically because at the time Spotify’s UI was very bad and Deezer’s was super clean and simple. Now it’s a cartoonish bright purple mess that’s harder to navigate and look at and read. At least if the purple could be changed to some muted color, the red was fine. Title font looks childish, logo looks like a dating app and the whole branding is lost. Now it’s like any other generic app...

There will be no going back? Well neither am I going back to Deezer then. Thanks for clarifying!

Userlevel 3

I just feel sorry for all the public communications Deezer staff that have got to deal with this. I’m sure a lot of them know how awful the new UI is, and they gotta be the ones to take the blow for these stupid decisions made by the CEO and CMO. I can picture these two sitting in their big chairs thinking that what Deezer really needs is to look more like TikTok and Fortnie or whatever. Now they alienate their user base, suddenly change the entire app from top to bottom, worsen the experience and the looks, double-down on their imbecile decisions, and the users who rightfully so feel angry flood the inbox of the unlucky employees who have nothing to do with the decision and who now gotta give a half-assed pre-written excuse about “being and belonging and empowering”. Like what the fuck does that mean. I’m only here to listen to songs I like.

It is clear the big people in the company won’t budge, as much as they know and see they fucked up. This project sunk hundreds of thousands of dollars, so if you still have hopes to see it being shut off in a week, it won’t. Next quarter, their stats will probably be down and they’ll still run with it because if they retract it looks bad on their part, even if it hurts the users.

Congrats to the CEO and the CMO. Now your app looks like garbage, cost millions of dollars, and you’ll lose a few thousand users in the process. Genius move.
