Optimizing client applications

Hello, in this topic I want to touch on the optimization of client applications, their work with the system.

I urge users of this forum to publish problems with application optimization in this thread.

Content delivery

The main task of streaming services is content delivery.

The Deezer application (Windows, v4.28.0, Electron), as far as I understand, upon an event of the need for audio data, starts loading them into RAM, simultaneously writing them to disk.

Downloading data from Deezer servers is performed without an open download speed limit, and at the same time filling N the amount of memory with slow writing to the disk, which is a problem.

As a solution to this problem, I see the gradual loading of data by the duration of listening, the creation of parameters to limit the download speed of data and limit the allocated memory, and with this assigning a smart auto mode to these parameters. I would also like to be able to install the cache space and downloadable audio streams.

Sincerely, Dmitri :no_mouth: .

Name of what’s playing now

A title in the Queue screen that tells you what kind of queue (playlist/album/artist or mix and their name) is playing (like in mobile app)

Hi there @Josh.Moore

I think you're right, there must be a topic about it. Are you talking about the desktop app selecting a different output source than the computer's default?

Userlevel 1

@Rudi Yeah! I really dreaming about control PC version from my smartphone. Deezer often recommend me blocked tracks in every days playlists and I hate go to my PC every time for skip that tracks. So this is really needed functionality.

Yes, that is correct. I guess it is kind of two things: being able to select a different output source (external DAC) and then also having the option to give the app exclusive access to the device. I am more than a little foggy on the technical details, so they could be one in the same. Here is a look at what I mean in the Qobuz desktop app in case that is helpful:

I think 2021 will be a great year for Deezer @Humanoiz stick around and you'll see some of these worries of yours getting sorted

The latest Windows 10 update(20H2) removed all the squares that contained the every app’s icon. Can you also remove that horrible (gray?) square from Deezer too? This makes the icon soo small, aside being ugly!

I was thinking it would be great to let us lock the deezer app when we are inactive just listening.
I mean sometimes I put a playlist to play and my friends go and change the song.
And well that is annoying...would be great to add some kind of pin code to unlock  deezer.

I know this can be done with thid party apps but would be nice to have it already there.

And I am talking about the desktop app on Mac and Windows.

Please add the song mix option of the selected artist (all songs of the currently viewed artist from singles and albums and compilations), not from musical recommendations.
It currently mixes with the Deezer suggestions.

We can’t add tracks for play next when playing Flow. When you want listen some tracks by new artists you can’t add them to the playlist in the Flow.

On the web app at least - I haven’t used the desktop app - the transport controls are uncomfortably far from the center where the playback position and track details are located. The Deezer website is adaptive, and on a 4K screen, this can be even more annoying as the distance can be bigger between the two sections. More so when the window is maximized.

Maybe also have the album art on the left of the playback and track details section to separate transport controls.

Thank you for your suggestions @borut @vasilisilio

Changing the icon could be done a bit quicker, but the song mix should be part of something bigger we'd like to improve. Stay tuned :v_tone2:

New Deezer user here. So I have a few improvements.

Make the entire bottom bar clickable

This would make the UX a bit better instead of clicking just the queue button in the bototm

Make the entire bottom bar change color based on album artwork (Instead of the progress bar)
This makes things a bit more consistent with the mobile app

Add “Go To Album” buttons to context menu for each track

Sometimes I’d like to see the album associated with the track. There should be an easy way to do this.

Add ability to refresh.

self explanatory. There are use cases that this needs to be an option

That’s what I noticed after using it for a few days.

Dark / Light Mode Auto Switch:

Can you use the windows night light state to switch the app from light to dark mode etc?

Visualizations:

Would it ever be possible to allow for the addition of winamp style visualizations?

Yeah, even lighter gray would be very noticeable in a big list - but not annoying.

Hi,

On the Mac OS X app (not iOS but the desktop Mac OS X app), may I suggest to have a dark/light mode following the system settings? That would be super useful!

Thanks!

Does anyone have a road map of when the optimised arm64 architecture build will start coming out? It drains battery a lot quicker this way. Thanks

Sorry, I’ve created a topic for this, but it seems that it belongs in here…

The Deezer app icon in MacOS doesn’t follow the human interface guidelines for macOS 11, utilising the whole icon area.

Hello @Weareqpr, yes it’s possible, the gapless has just been integrated to the mobile app, it should soon be available on the desktop app as well  We’ll let you know on the Community once that’s the case.

Have a nice day

On the latest version of the app for Android, the one with visual improvements specially on artist pages, which is really awesome kudos for that, however, the submenu to get to "Do not recommended this artist" seems to have been removed.

If it has been removed I would truly appreciate if you can restore this feature at least as an optional feature.

Kudos for the good work!

I just tried the desktop app for the first time tonight, I hit the close button and it kept playing, took me a few minutes to realize you minimize to tray when the close button is selected. That's a big no no for me (it's an autism thing about unwanted noise)

Most programs that do this have a setting to change the behaviour so the the close ("X") button actually closes the app.

It literally is terrible and I only use it because spotify won't let me use it while I have discord open. So, the issues go on like this:

  1. Why the hell do I still, AFTER TWO YEARS, don't have the option to make this app close when I press the close button? The way it works now is stupid af, needing me to go the f**** notifications tab and end the process there. This is stupid and should not be up by default and it's a SIN that I don't have the option to turn it off;

  2. Why the heck can't I select my output devices? This is SO BASIC, like, it just breaks the app in so many ridiculous ways;

  3. Why can I not select where my music is dowloaded? I have THREE DIFFERENT STORAGE DEVICES!!!;

  4. Why do I not even have a goddamn settings tab for how it interacts with the OS?

In conlusion, the theme here is: GIVE ME MORE OPTIONS. Right now I feel like this is apple's wet dream, on which the company decides everything they want me to use. I don't want an app that chooses things for me, I want an app that lets ME choose the way I want it to run.

I don’t know if this is the right place to ask, but is there a way we can see a somewhat more transparent version of what bugs/features are being worked on, and timelines?

@Rudi you’ve been doing a great job at managing people’s complaints and expectations, but perhaps something that you can point to with regards to updates can help everyone.

Just a simple idea, because, at least for me, having the playback controls on the left in Windows app is absolute pain. I’d like it to be centered so I don’t have to move around a huge screen to pause, skip, find in track etc. If you’re worried about the negative space on the left, we could always do with album artwork for example :D

That is a very good question @Paulo Magbanua I'm actively working towards that, trying to be more and more transparent with our community. It's difficult because in tech a lot can change from one day to another and we also face our own challenges when developing features and fixing bugs. I'm hoping to add a 'Product Updates' feature to our community this year, from our provider, InSided. It's a tool that will enable community managers like myself to keep the community updated with certain developments here at Deezer.

So around Deezer, the community is actually the best place to find out updated info on our platform. And the best place to ask if the info isn't available.

At the moment I can tell you that we're working on improving our SDKs (for existing and future integrations), our desktop app (improving performance, fixing bugs and adding new features), our player (for all apps), among other important developments. This is the year when Deezer decided to kill these annoying bugs once and for all, and also to improve our connectivity. If you have any specific question, please feel free to send me a PM
