Can you please add gender non-specified as a gender option

well, the title says it all. It feels uncomfortable for me like this and i think other people who feel this way will be really grateful too. thanks for helping.
@smellie thanks for this great feedback! We have duly noted this 😉
For people who want privacy , is an excellent idea.
Yes please please add this, it makes me really uncomfortable that I have been made to choose one or the other. I don’t even see why it’s relevant on a music app!
Still no change? Seems like a simple enough addition... or just remove the question/category
Hey @treant

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, no changes so far. But it has been discussed several times recently. If there's an update, we'll refresh this topic.

still no change?

this is really pathetic. i am an artist that has music hosted with deezer & i am really annoyed that only the two binary genders are offered. if no one addresses this issue i will have to withdraw my release from deezer and spread the word of how discriminatory this service is.

its almost 2020 y’all, stop excluding people from your platform- you are ultimately the ones losing in the end

id say remove gender completely, its completely, 100% irrelevant, but at least an unspecified or fill-in-the-blanks is a simple addition.

(also i am non-binary femme so ya, you are directly insulting my existence if you don’t address this...)

just pick a random one. it doesnt matter for music streaming service. i just pick a gender because it is required field. but never look at it again. didnt even know there was a field honestly because ive never seen it since i signed up

@terr, not defending them not adding it, I agree there should be an “other” or “not specified”, but the reason most companies have the option is to keep tabs on who is using their user base. I hope this example doesn’t offend you, because the is not the intent, I only wish to share information. Ex. if they have a user base that is 70% female, this would lead the company to see how to increase the small 30% ratio of males to ultimately get more subscribers.

So, adding in a “unspecified” option would probably help if they wanted to start a campaign to target that specific demographic. Just sharing knowledge so it’s not unknown why they ask for gender.

Hi there @terr

We're sorry you feel that way - it's understandable. @solstice_outcry raised an interesting and genuine point, but it isn't the only thing where gender plays a part.

In any case, I'm happy to take on your feedback and pass it on to the relevant teams here at Deezer. Thank you for your support.

@Rudi  & @solstice_outcry

I don’t think you quite understand what I’m getting at. For one, by not including gender categories outside of the binary you are forcing non-binary people to identify falsely. This obviously generates inaccurate data, but it is also direct discrimination of a marginalized population. It doesn’t matter if offense is intended or not, it is offensive. If you really want to keep tabs on your user  base, provide inclusive options or don’t provide any at all. I just want to be recognized as the human being I am and there isn’t an appropriate option in Deezer for me and the thousands of other non-binary people at the moment.

Essentially, here is the thing: Do you want me as an artist and a consumer of your service?

Than respect me. That’s all there is to it. Currently you are not doing so.

I’m open to continue this conversation further, but if Deezer decides to continue to ignore this simple thing (and it really is simple… I’ve done a bit of web coding...) I’ll have to back out of this service, retract my music and start spreading the word of this lack of care.

(ps thanks @stevenomes for understanding how pointless having a gender option is, ultimately)

Oh @terr, I think you misunderstood me. I completely agree with you, they should have the option available for everyone to be included and respected.

I hope it’s implemented as soon as possible, and I’m sorry for my poor wording!

You have my vote.

Would not it be better to give up completely on the collection of a person's gender? Even "different" or "unspecified" is discriminatory to me. And it is probably too much to comprehend all possible variants of the appearance and/or the self-understanding of a person.

I’m non-binary and don’t associate myself with a binary gender so attempting to choose is invalidating I’m many ways I’d be cool if “other was added as an option

the same thing i would say with your user name. i dont put my real name, i guess i dont understand what the issue is because i dont even think about it. its a music streaming service. the field is completely worthless and i treat it as as such. put whatever you want for gender and never look at it again.

I can’t believe this is still an issue. I just signed up because my favorite artist created a playlist for fans, and I was immediately put off because I was forced to select a binary gender. For an app used worldwide to not have an other and/or unspecified option in 2020 is ridiculous, not to mention discriminatory. Please fix this.

how long will it take to add a third option into Deezer?
I don't think its that difficult RIGHT….???

Hey @Sergi.Sanz @Em1 @stevenomes @RinTheHuman @Saschimi

Thank you all for your comments, feedback and honesty. I'll be forwarding everything to our teams here at Deezer in order to reinforce the need for this improvement :v_tone2:

Hi @Rudi,

thanky for your reply.

Could you or somebody from Deezer explain why it is neccessary to know the gender of a user, please?

Please make any info correct. I know some cases where user provided company with fake email, fake data of birthday, and what else. All not right. His account was hacked, and he had subscription on it. Paying for that. No option to verify customer since he didn’t know his account details.

You are either man or woman, what to hide?

One girl has forgotten password, she was not able to recover it, since email was not known by her, since it was not personal and she couldn’t verify account for her name with data she needed.

Everything you add to Deezer, as personal, stays personal.

I doubt it. We talk about data and information technology where nothing is secure.

It’s a matter of informational self-determation and personal data economy.

In your logic I should give a company as much information as possible to identify me. Scary.

Most people give it already using Microsoft, Google, Facebook and Apple eco systems.

It is important to opt out, I hope they will add it.

Thanks. I hope something comes of it soon.

Uh, you’re either a man or a woman… except if you’re not. For me it’s less about privacy and more about the invalidation of non-binary identities. But privacy matters too, which is why I think it‘s best to have both an other/non-binary option and an unspecified/not given option.

Thanks for coming back and helping the discussion everyone - @Em1 @hpguru @Saschimi

Your info is definitely secure - I'm a user myself so I can assure you we take this very very seriously.

About the gender option, it can be used in different ways, for different purposes - but the good news is that I've chased the teams for this (working in 2 big departments) and they confirmed they're currently working on it :grinning:

Stay tuned, as soon as I have more info, I'll be writing here :thumbsup_tone2:
