Allow usage of VPN

I have issues using my VPN provider with Deezer. As I understand it you don’t support VPN (wrong usage if terms though, you block it). This is a huge issue for those of us interested in security and privacy on the web. I manged to login to my account on my Android TV after temporary removing my subnet from my access list in my router, after logging in I could apply the settings again. Although, it seems to break from time to time requiring me do to the same step again. This is not OK!

I’m about to finish my bachelor in IT-forensics and Cybersecurity, so I know the importance of this stuff. And disabling my VPN is out of the question. This must de allowed in some sort from the application. Spotify supports it (my friend tried it with his account at my home from the same device), and so should you.

I’m a Deezer user for more then a decade, and I don’t wanna switch to Spotify. But not be able to use VPN to protect my privacy is a deal breaker for me. This issue need to be addressed.

Hi @zynex, like you said we don’t permit the use of VPN. I would say that on of the main reasons is due regional restrictions on content due to licensing agreements.

And from a quick research done on the web I could see that other music competitors have restrictions as well to the use of VPNs if I am not wrong.

I have no plan to change provider for one service unwillingness to make sure VPN works. I have used OVPN (Swedish provider) for almost 10 years, and it works really well. I have my infrastructure configured specifically for this use.

I use deezer, and often switch my local lan to various openvpn tunnels. Some redirecting the full traffic, some not (IPV4 only though). Never had any issue with deezer.

I usually have deezer playing when switch to the VPN, and it does not even stop the streaming.

Maybe your issue, is not deezer related. but network related? Or I misunderstood the question.

I use split VPN in OPNsense for the connection (have web servers that needa to bypass it), and all other devices uses the VPN. It’s definitly a Deezer issue, when disabling it temporarily I could login without issue. Tried logging out from the app in my phone to, and couldn’t login while connected to my LAN but worked when i used mobile network.

Deezer works once I loged in, and I can use it after that. It’s seems to block it when trying to logon (getting a error about username/password even thou correct).

I know you aren’t really to blame fully here. The music (and movie) industry hasn’t adapted to the digital reality we live in today very good, they still live in the era of tape recorders mentally. Some competitors probably do to (Spotify seems not to though?).

The problem here is that VPN is a important thing today due to the invasive privacy legacies mandated by many state actors, so the use of VPN is non negotiable. I myself is in the process of writing a bachelor thesis in this exact field, so I know all the issues inherent here. You should implement some way to validate the country of origin so you could allow the usage of VPN services to (it’s doable).

I agree with all user post so I won't add more. I would like Deezer reps to show us in the terms and conditions where it is mentioned that VPN cannot be used. I cannot find any mention of this so it seems Deezer should indeed be supporting VPN.

This issue hasn't been an issue for me until very recently. I have to switch off VPN to login on the web and Android

For me also, not being able to use my vpn is a big problem..

as far as I tested i can listen to ANY music from around the planet, se the problem with licencing is non existand.

mMaybe Deezer should update the agrements with the artist and tell them that theis music is accesable to the WHOLE world?

(and then allow the use of a vpn!)

Hi @marcvdfv @Evonos! As you mentioned, we don’t permit the use of VPNs.

One of the main reasons for this is due to regional content restrictions that are based on licensing agreements.

These agreements limit how content can be accessed in certain areas.

well, until shortly I could use my VPN, and I tried it before I started my paid subscription, after a few months suddenly I couldn’t log in.

Thats the biggest problem.

The next problem is the trackers you use to be able to open this community, i don’t want to be tracked!

I would have thought the reason to exclude VPN would be a misguided attempt to flag people who are sharing/abusing their password.  Every time I boot my computer with VPN I get a different IP address but in the same country.  I wouldn’t want Deezer to think it was someone somewhere else using my account.

That said, I use VPN on my main computer and use Deezer Web Player on a second computer, but turn off the VPN whenever I have the Deezer Player running.  I don’t like having to do that, but if it is a condition of service then I will continue to do it.

Having the user manually indicate its country (with restrictions and cooldown) and having content restrictions based on this could maybe allow vpns.

Or if allowing vpns is out of the question, fixing the fact that when I open the deezer app with my vpn turned on (so most of the time since deezer is the only app needing it off), it disconnects me.
