Repetitive "Shuffle my music" // keeps playing the same songs

Hi,

I've been using Shuffle My Music (web version of Deezer) / Flow (web) / Shuffle My Music (but on the Android app) a lot during the lockdown and I still can't fathom how it's such a mess (well actually, I work in software, I can, but that's not the point ;-))

  • You'd think Flow would pick stuff outside of my favorites, and Shuffle would not, but no, actually the 2 (well, 3) features seem to do
  • Even worse, Shuffle sometimes seems to go where it pleases, ends up playing like 80% outside of my favorites…
  • Song picking algorithm does not produce good results to me, it basically behaves like I have 100 favorite tracks instead of 1000 albums, too much songs in common in one shuffle session vs. another one...
  • Shuffle on Android somehow seems a bit different vs. web (a little less repetitive (?), also does not have an “end” (i.e. next gets disabled at some point) like the others), but maybe it's just me...

Hi there @marc.perrin

Thank you for your constructive feedback - I'll be passing it on to our devs. In the meantime, I suggest you checking our ideation forum here :thumbsup_tone2:

Hello,

Indeed, Favourites > Shuffle My Music is pretty shocking.

Even if you want to keep that broken-ish feature as is, why can't we get an additional button for unlimited, uniform distribution random play on the whole favourites library? You could even let the users (opt in for advanced features and) write/manage multiple custom shuffle rule sets (e.g. true random on my lib but without metal or classical, true random on my lib but jazz only, etc.).

NB: I’ve also noticed that there are sometimes (not hard to repro) short sequences (say, 3-5 songs) that are repeated (once) during shuffle (shuffle > (...) a b c d e f g d e f g h i j k l (...))

I get that the devs are hard at work on tricky scale/streaming problems, but you could spare a few for UX / to build some direly needed features.

Thanks

Hi @timh we are very sorry that the “Shuffle my Music” feature algorithm is not perfect yet. I can assure you that the feedback has been passed on to the product team several times. They had to focus on other features but I just asked for you again and will let you know as soon as have more info.

In the meantime, I highly recommend that you simply shuffle your favourites, listen to your Flow, listen to the new playlist Top 2019  or shuffle your own playlists on other days for more variety.

The response should be ‘its just how our app DOESN’T work’.  People have been formally and informally complaining of this for over a year with zero response. It’s among many Deezer “features” like random massive volume swings (useless leveling) or countless ‘live only’ or ‘cover’ versions of songs instead of original artist high quality studio recordings. Only the handful of folks at Deezer seem to have trouble understanding why the rest of the world finds these issues problematic with streaming music services.

Hi there, it's just how it works! Our devs are aware of it and hopefully it will be changed soon! 😉
HI @Uhland sorry for the late reply. Have you tried to clear the cache? We used to have other users complaining about this, but it was supposed to be fixed. Which version of the app do you have installed?
Hello, I am on the latest version on a huawei p30 pro the the queue is exactly the same. I had to clear the cache, force the app to close and turn off my phone to get a new queue. but then, the new queue is repeating itself

for a "random" option, it is quite frustrating

Thank you

When my deezer app is running on shuffle mode it will not cycle through my entire catalog. I reached out to them and they gave me a robotic response to look at a link and if anything the link shows that even with the free app it should run through your favorite tracks. I went on a 5 hour drive 2 days ago and it would only play certain tracks and repeated some. I have gone so far as to delete the first tracks to try and force the app to play newer selections. It really frustrating. It almost seems like a ploy to get me to upgrade? Any one else have this issue?

Hi @ymns3321 could you try to clear the cache? This used to be an issue, but users did not complain about this anymore.

It seems like it was fixed in 6.0.10.146!
Testing for two days now and every time i hit "shuffle my music" it starts playing different songs.

This is awesome, thanks Deezer team!

can't listen to anything shuffled because order is pretty much always the same
Describing the issue aside, why can't "Shuffle my music" actually shuffle all the tracks, albums and artists I have liked? And by shuffle, I mean complete randomness. That is what I expect from a feature with that title. Like having all of my MP3s loaded to Winamp with the shuffle option enabled.

HI @ymns3321 thanks for getting back to me. Just to clarify: You say the first batch is always the same, but then you also say you don't notice any problem with the first selection as it plays tracks randomly just like you expect it.

I am struggeling to understand as it seems a contradiction. I understand the first batch is always the same songs more or less, but plays them in different order every time?

Yes, my response seem not quite clear even for me now, sorry :)

What i was tying to say is that i didnt notice that this repeating batch has lots of popular tracks or contains only popular artists, so there's no problem for me with the songs in the batch (someone said that they have some songs favored over the others while shuffling). The only issue for me is that the first batch stucks and getting repeated between "shuffle my library" sessions.

Hi @ymns3321 @unklehomer sorry about that. So you basically get the same selection of songs every time you use the the "shuffle my music". Was this different before? Have you noticed a change in behaviour? Which devices are you using and which version of Deezer do you have installed? I will need more info to be able to pass this on.

Hi Flo,

My environment is Android 8.1.0, app 6.0.8.1 currently, but this behavior was there in earlier app versions also.

Yes, the selection is the same, just plays in random order. The selection itself can persist for some time (hours, days) and then changes. To me, it seems like the shuffling source comes in batches from the backend and it seems like the first batch is always the same. After the first batch (or selection, sorry i may be not clear here because of lack of language knowlege) is played, it seems like the next coming tracks are random.

I dont notice any problems with the first selection content (the one which gets repeated) - it doesnt seem to play only popular tracks from my library or something like this. It's always just a random library tracks - exactly what i expect it to be :)

Also, shuffling only downloaded songs is working fine and always play random songs.

I can provide any additional information if needed.
Hi!

I'm experiencing the same issue in the app (using Pixel 3). While the playlist and the playing order are not always 100% identical, it's clear that the same artists/albums/songs are favored over others. Some songs/artists that I've added to my music are never played.

I tried clearing the cache of the app, but that did not help. Maybe clearing the storage will do the trick, but I'm reluctant.

Pretty sure it's always been like this.
Things are better through the browser.

@unklehomer I am happy to hear that it got better, I will anyway pass on your case and let the developers know 😉

Hi Flo

I've done some cache deletion and now once I push through the same selection of songs it starts to work properly and get properly random. Since then I seem to get those songs shown above still smattered thorugh he first 20, but new stuff also creeping in. So its fading, but still not totally random.

Originally if I kept listening the same songs started to repeat.

I'm on the latest OS for a samsung s7, v6.0.8.1 of deezer. I've only jsut started using shuffle, and it seems I got stuck with my first shuffle for a couple of weeks.

Unk.

4 sequentially generated playlists, I noticed mine is showing a strong bias towards my BBC playlister playlist which I have recently updated.

I'm gettin this as well, just started using shuffle, started great but I've heard this playlist a lot now. Also if it goes on long enough it actually starts repeating tracks...

Hi,

"Shuffle my music" keeps shuffling the same queue of 20-30 songs and changing the queue source occasionally, but not every time i hit the button. It can be the same queue for days. Is there any workaround for this besides trying to clean app cache?

Hi there @TunnelVision

Thanks for the feedback. Normally the topic host always received a notification - so we'll look into this 😉

Ok, thanks Rafael.

Another feature to point out was that I wasn't notified of your reply haha. I had to log in to see whether anyone had responded... you'd think i'd get an email notification, or that my main Deezer screen (where I choose my songs etc...) would indicate somewhere that i've had a response in the community section.
