Is it normal to have several tracks repeated way too frequently when you are in the Flow feature?

Hello,

I’m used to playing Deezer flow through Sonos.

I face two “issues”:

  1. It is not an infinite flow, as it always ends after something like a hundred songs (There are 2000 marked as favourite).
  1. It is a little annoying since flow seems to follow always the same sequence, sometimes adding new tracks.

Hey @alice07

Thanks for reporting this to us. I'll be passing your comments to the relevant teams here at Deezer.

Just so you know, our teams are working on providing a whole new integration with Sonos devices, as we're partners as well - stay tuned to the community :v_tone2:

Any updates ?

Hey @alice07

Still work in progress. Thanks for staying in the loop and don't forget to subscribe to this topic here for further updates

Well, it’s now 10 months on from my first post about Flow being a PoS.

Three days ago I had to stop Flow, after using it for the first time in months, because it played Emmylou Harris’s Going Back To Harlan about five times in two hours. Same track, not a mix of live versions of anything.

That just shows you how lame Flow’s algorithm is and that not one thing has been done to improve it in almost a year.

My annual subscription is up for renewal next month, AND the price has just gone up. Do you think I should A) renew, or 😎 change music services? (Hint: it’ll probably be B.)

Yes, Flow could be better. Also I do not like when flow plays 90’s dance or pop dance music.

If I listen certain pop track, doesn’t mean I want it and similar flow, or something.

Today it played DJ Bobo, and never in my life I listened anything 90’s pop dance on Deezer.

I also do not like to ban tracks, as I do not dislike any music, but do not want it to play either.

Also it is not very practical to keep 1 000 000 tracks or artists banned.

The heart, broken heart (dislike) and default/no heart selection would do much better.

Hey @Steve C

Sorry to hear about that. But thanks for the feedback.

Work is being done on Flow constantly - but it also needs fine-tuning from you, along with more favourites added. Have you checked the tips from this topic here?

The Flow algorithm still needs work - with the my 2020 lists and stats recently presented (which is great) it shows that my ‘favourite’ track has been played 180 odd times this year so every second day.  I like the song but not that much and there are several similar.  I have over 600 tracks in favourites yet Flow doesn’t play them all regularly or anything close to that, if the full stats were available I’d guarantee some of my favourites are <5 plays through Flow in 12 months, some 180+ so there’s no real logic present.  I still think given Deezer clearly counts the number of times it plays a track it can’t be that hard to make it play each track less regularly or smooth the difference between most and lest played favourites?  You can dislike a song so it doesn’t play it again, why can’t you ‘it’s ok’ a track to play it occasionally or something but not daily or worse.  Or make it so over a month all tracks in favourites are played equally give or take 20% say?

This request is many months/years in this chat with the developers ‘looking into it’ but no improvement really.  Can it please be considered a little more earnestly?

Sure thing @gdr thanks for the rightful words here.

The thing with Flow, so that you know, is that it's constantly worked on. We focus a lot on the recommendations, which may vary a lot depending on the user. There are some improvements in the pipeline, so I'll add your comments to the mixture - like I said to you just now, on another topic, 2021 is the year where we want to focus on getting basics right, rather than developing many new features :thumbsup_tone2:

Good day.

I am Deezer Premiere user for 6 months.

Flow was indeed a joke on first day, but eventually not only FLOW did learn, but I as well.

So how FLOW exactly works?

Some repetition is expected. It wants to play from new stuff to classics and from that to songs you never heard of in the long time. How you provide a lesson for a FLOW? Skip tracks you do not like, ban tracks you hear too often and they are not related. Like as much tracks as possible.

Avoid to listen music you normally do not listen long term. And what I mean by that?

Let’s say you listen classical and jazz music most of the time.

If you want to listen sometimes rap music, do not listen it each day a bit. Listen it one day a bit in week. This is how I listen rap and r&b music without affecting my flow too much, thanks.

This GUARANTEES your flow will not be affected long term, instead short term.

FLOW is constantly learning. Nothing is perfect as well.

Please do keep discovering your musical journey on Deezer, I promise flow do get better over time.

Especially in 2021, now when Rudi finally announced it.

And please do not forget to live your best life

Sorry to hear that.

You will receive good news, perhaps in 2021.

They are going to increase playlist limits. The well heard 2 000 limit anywhere Deezer will be much bigger. I can not guarantee unlimited however, that’s what their managers said here. I am now just repeating them, sorry. They do come with solution soon. I am waiting too, as Deezer is my life.

Premium.

Please do not forget to enjoy your finest life (and Deezer) as well!

Flow is really very very bad. I gave it a chance today after about two months and it played about an hour. Then I turned the phone off and on and the flow started playing the same songs again in the same order. Incredibly. I like daily mixes but flow is really a joke.

I'll pass these comments on straight away, @Placido09 very good feedback, thank you!

I have the same problem, over 300 liked songs, several liked artists, lists and albums and there's still a song that gets played about 7 or 8 times in a couple of hours and there are songs that I haven't heard in a while. At this rythm I will remove it from my liked songs (as it happened before with other song, but I thought it was a problem of the song but it's not.)

Here's the proof... Look at the "Name of Love"

I have the same issue all the time. I’m not sure if this was ever fixed…?

Hey @tonks416

Thanks for reporting it. What Android and Deezer app versions have you got installed?

I have found this as well, it is like the algo sees that a track has been played so bumps it further up the list to be played. Same with some of the playlists, always playing the same tracks (in different lists). It never seems to delve into my favourites (which has now hit the 2000 limit, another significant issue) but often just loops around the same set of tracks.

On the plus side it has finally stopped playing me what I can only assume were promoted tracks like Justin Bieber, which is nowhere near my taste.

So, generally, a mixed feedback @sethwj have you tried clearing the app's cache? Do you use our "don't recommend this track" feature?

About the favourites' limits, don't worry, we're sorting that out very very soon! :relaxed:

Sorry Deezer Guys, but the same answer again,  “we pass it to the development team” since two years, and the same issue rises. Sorry, don’t take it personal, but this seems to me a “copy paste” uniform bullshit answer.

Same problem in my case as well. For example I love the band Rage. I’d be happy to hear their songs, but Flow passes only one song to me always. Almost in the same order any time. I alredy hate listening to Flow. People here seem to be very patient But I have changed your concurrence to Deezer 2 years ago for the same reason: the dayli and the weekly recomendations did not change. In that time they lost a lot of costumers and if you only promise changes but nothing happens you’ll loose too. At least me and my family, but I’m sure more is already gone and more will leave.

I agree that the Flow algorithm needs work and that it has needed work for 2+ years.  I've followed this chat over that period as has been suggested and aside from promises it is being worked on nothing appears to happen, similar to another chat I have been monitoring with similarly ineffective resolution.  I still believe that this should be easy to fix - if the algorithm can learn your favourites and indeed exclude tracks why on earth can't it select more tracks more randomly rather than repeating the same small percentage of my favourite tracks and ignoring the others?

It's all we can do really @gdr @János Elek, let our teams know about your experience. But the truth is that they're constantly working on improvements, which perhaps you don't see but other users do.

The good thing is that we're actually developing an update to Flow. It'll give you a bit more control over what you get and I honestly hope you'll like it. Stay tuned for more info, I'll be hopefully announcing in the homepage when the time comes :relaxed:

I’ve been using Deezer for just over a year now, and the Flow algorithm has been consistently terrible. It’s not bad at finding other music that I might like, but it keeps repeating the same songs over and over again, whether they are my favourites or not.

I have an idea to fix this. I think it would be relatively simple to implement but would have a hugely positive impact. Every track played should have a “Last Played” property. When Flow is looking for the next song to play, if the song’s “Last Played” date is within the last week (or whatever time period) then Flow re-rolls and randomly selects another song. This would help to keep the Flow fresh.

I'll be passing your comments on @maxkshaw

Our Flow is getting some improvements soon, perhaps they can help with the fresh experience you're describing as well :relaxed:

Thanks @Rudi. To add to my idea, I think it would be good to add customisation options for your Flow, for example:

  • “No Repeat” period:
    1 day 1 week 1 month

(songs that were last played during this period will not show in this Flow)

  • “Favourited” ratio:
    5

(the ratio of Favourited songs to non-Favourited songs played in the Flow, e.g. every 5th song is one that I’ve already Favourited. 4/5 songs are “new”)

These options could be put under the Preferences section of the Settings menu. Maybe create a new item called Flow.

Flow is getting much better this year.

As Rudi, the community manager commented few below stating that Flow is getting some improvements soon, perhaps they can help your situation as well and they will. Very big.

Please stay for a while to see it yourself, @Placido09 :)

Spot on @hpguru

I really like your suggestions @maxkshaw we've got some customisation improvements to be added to Flow this year, so let's see what you think of them, when they come :relaxed:
