Do you know those albums where you can't figure out when a track starts and ends? Melodies seamless moving from one to another, like an eager humming-bird :dove: from flower :rosette: to flower :blossom: … :violin::musical_score:

Of course you do!

Put the philosophical moment aside, you've been asking us about this feature for quite some time now  :bellhop::hammer:

We've worked and worked hard to finally deliver to you a standard you deserve: Gapless playback. :v_tone2:

The feature isn't surely new to the world but it took some sweat to be implemented in our super vast catalogue. In fact, we're doing this gradually so that your listening experience runs smoothly, without any hiccups - literally :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: :fog:

For those who aren't familiar with the technical stuff, this is what we're talking about:

  • Audio formats such as MP3 and FLAC add tiny little gaps of silence before and after the track, which can be disruptive to listening when the content recorded wasn't intended to have gaps between each track -  a good example being a recording of a live album or concert.  Gapless playback will remove these gaps at the beginning and end, to offer an improved listening experience.

For now, this is for our mobile Android and iOS apps - and for HiFi users only. This is because our FLAC catalogue doesn't need re-encoding (the tracks are ready for the feature) but our MP3's will need some polishing before everyone can enjoy it. And remember, there's no need to switch anything on, we've taken care of that for you

So if you're on Android and can't wait, update your app to 6.2.1 (you must be a Beta user) and if you're on iOS, this should already be a part of your life but if it isn't, you just need to wait a bit longer  :calling:

For our desktop app and web users, don't worry, we're finishing it too :thumbsup_tone2::nerd:

What's the first album you're listening to? Let us know below!

I think you'll know my choice

Not on HiFi? Check out our offers here :raised_hands_tone2:

Can't wait to get your Premium subscription on gapless too? Please see here for more info

It's being rolled-out gradually - so wait for your turn :stuck_out_tongue:

So… is this just not coming to Desktop? Is there no way to get gap-less playback from a computer? Desktop App or Web?

There might be a theoretical workaround if you use Windows 11, because that OS version has direct support for Android apps, at least for U.S. users. So you could install the Deezer Android app on Windows 11 if it is available via Amazon app store, as Microsoft does not support apps from the Google Play Store.

I think there also is a way to use iOS apps on a Mac computer, but I don’t know this for sure.

For our desktop app and web users, don't worry, we're finishing it too :thumbsup_tone2::nerd:

TWO YEARS AGO!

I know you guys get a lot of these questions(sorry) but how is the development for gap-less on desktop? Just want to know if y’all are close with it or had some setbacks.

It’s been promised on desktop for years. My first will be any opera, most of which are unlistenable without gapless. Other albums are fine with gaps because they’re one song after another. Sometimes a gap is good. Also One Too Many Salty Swift And Not Goodbye by the Cecil Taylor Unit, a very long jazz piece.

HiFi desktop app user here… I’m still experiencing gaps in 2023?

Am I doing something wrong?

Regards,

Jack

I recently got a premium subscription for deezer, mainly because I want to use it as a desktop app for HiFi streaming AND because you promised gapless playback already a long time ago.

You are saying that most subscribers only use the mobile app? What’s the point of HiFi streaming if people use smartphones with low quality soundcards and decoders. What about the ideal of delivering the art in the way the artists intended it to be delivered? Not sure if you care, but you advertise it. Since 2 or 3 years you promise gapless playback for desktop apps now? What’s the big deal with it?

Additionally, you are saying that many albums are MP3’s? But deezer would still suggest it to be HiFi? Are you trying to deceive your subscribers?

We're getting there @Jean-Marc Bottaro!

We've implemented it for HiFi users across the entire catalogue if you use the iOS app. Android users are following and we're also working on encoding our MP3 catalogue for Premium and Family subscribers, at the same time we develop gapless for desktop users :v_tone2:

You should definitely add the possibility to display the audio quality and file format of the uploaded files!

If you want to lose subscribers keep going !

Please comment.

Recently played Carpenters Now and Then. B-side full of gaps.

Hello @arilin are you referring to this album - https://www.deezer.com/us/album/72067332. Do you mean this album is not gapless?

If you are talking about a different album, please share the link so our catalog team can have a look.

Just for you to have some more context about Gapless, all our FLAC content is available in gapless playback and the majority of Deezer’s standard mp3 catalogue is also available to enjoy with gapless playback.

Yes, here is the link, appears to refer to the same album: https://deezer.page.link/B4L25y9Xhp4ekXuF8

B-side should play gapless but at least on my PC (Win11, Deezer app, hifi quality) there is a gap between all tracks.

The desktop app is not gapless, but the web player is. It plays that album from track 6 on without gaps.

Hi @arilin, unfortunately, the gapless feature is not available on the Desktop app.
However, you can still enjoy gapless playback on the Web.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Isn’t this a bit disapointing since as a recent hifi subscriber I thought that the pc app would be the best assurance of receiving unpacked sound with minimum sw layers before da conversion. Can you share some details how the web app will perform vs desktop app (win11)

Hello @arilin as mentioned above, in the web as on mobile apps, you will get the gapless experience in all tracks re-encoded to assure the best music experience when listen for example an live concert. That experience is not available in the Desktop app.

Please refer my question to someone who knows what I’m talking about. It is no use repeating answers already given.

Hi @arilin regarding your main question about the differences between Web and Desktop app would resume to three big ones:

  • The option Download content that is only available in the Desktop app
  • Gapless available on web version
  • Chromecast only available as well in web version

Audio experience in terms of quality is exactly the same with all option available.

Hope these details help you understand better the difference about both experiences.

Hi,

I’ve been listening to this album in Hi-Fi quality on the web version

https://deezer.page.link/NFiAsZk3Ct7aCgmp9

And there’s gap between Tears in Heaven and Lonely Stranger...

Right, the applause gets interrupted. Maybe that album is not gapless at all, I just noticed another gap between Layla and Running on Faith. I also listened in the web player with audio quality set to HiFi.
