1964 

The Beatles scored their first No.1 best seller in the US when I Want to Hold Your Hand reached the top of the Cash Box Magazine music chart. 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' became the Beatles' best-selling single worldwide, selling more than 12 million copies. It was the first Beatles record to be made using four-track recording equipment.

January 26th

1974 

Ringo Starr went to No.1 on the US singles chart with his version of the Johnny Burnette 1960 hit 'Your Sixteen', a No.3 hit in the UK.

January 27th

1967 

The soundtrack of the film The Sound of Music was at No.1 on the UK album chart. With music and lyrics by Rodgers and Hammerstein the album was released in 1965 by RCA Victor and is one of the most successful soundtrack albums in history, having sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. It was the Best Selling Album in the UK in 1965, 1966 and 1968 and the second-best-selling of the decade, spending a total of 70 weeks at No.1 on the UK Chart.

January 28th

1995

TLC started a four-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Creep' the group's first US No.1, it made No.6 in the UK the following year. The lyrics portray the singers as women who cheat on their unfaithful lovers for "some affection". This context was controversial within the group, and strongly opposed by member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, who threatened to wear black tape over her mouth on its accompanying music video.

January 29th

2006  

Arctic Monkeys went to No.1 on the UK album chart with their debut album Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not. The Sheffield-based band's album became the fastest-selling debut in chart history after shifting more than 360,000 copies in its first week of release. The album's title was taken from a line from the novel Saturday Night and Sunday Morning written by Alan Sillitoe.

January 30th

1964

The Searchers were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with the Sonny Bono song 'Needles And Pins'. The group's second UK No.1 had originally been recorded by Jackie DeShannon. The song has also been covered by the Ramones and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

January 31st

1987 

Paul Simon went back to No.1 on the UK album chart with Graceland, (the album stayed on the chart for a total 163 weeks). 'Graceland' later won the 1987 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, while the title song won the 1988 Grammy Award for Record of the Year.

February 1st

2013 

Coldplays 'Clocks' topped a list by BBC Radio 6 Music's top 100 tracks of the past 10 years. More than 100,000 votes were cast in the poll which looked back over the 10 years since the station began in 2002. Arctic Monkeys' 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' was voted into second place, and Elbow's 'One Day Like This' in third.

1974  

The Carpenters started a four week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with 'The Singles 1969-73', featuring 12 hits and the US No.1 'Top Of The World' it went back to the top of the charts on three other occasions.

February 3rd

1979 

Blondie had their first of five UK No.1 singles, with 'Heart Of Glass', taken from the band's third studio album, Parallel Lines. 'Heart of Glass' was originally recorded in 1975 under the name 'Once I Had a Love.'

February 4th

1977 

Fleetwood Mac released Rumours. The songs 'Go Your Own Way', 'Don't Stop', 'Dreams', and 'You Make Loving Fun' were released as singles. Rumours is Fleetwood Mac's most successful release; along with winning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1978, the record has sold over 45 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

February 5th

1969 

The Move were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Blackberry Way', the group's only UK No.1 and the band's most successful single.

February 6th

1965 

The Righteous Brothers started a two-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with the Phil Spector produced 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'. The song was also No.1 in the UK for the duo (who were not related in any way).

February 7th

1973

The Stooges released their third studio album Raw Power. The album gained a cult following in the years following its release and, like its predecessor (1970s Fun House), is generally considered an influential forerunner of punk rock. Kurt Cobain said on numerous times that Raw Power was his favorite album of all time.

February 8th

1981 

R.E.M. made their first ever-recording sessions at Bombay Studios Smyrna, Georgia. Tracks included 'Gardening At Night', 'Radio Free Europe' and '(Don't Go Back To) Rockville.'

February 9th

1985 

 Madonna started a three-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 'Like A Virgin', (a No.3 hit in the UK). It became her first No.1 in the Billboard Hot 100, and topped the charts in Australia and Canada, while reaching the top ten elsewhere. 'Like a Virgin' has sold over six million copies worldwide.

February 10th

1984

Frankie Goes To Hollywood were at No.1 on the UK singles chart for the third week with 'Relax.' One of the decade's most controversial and most commercially successful records, 'Relax' eventually sold a reported two million copies in the UK alone, easily ranking among the ten Best Selling Singles in the UK. It remained in the UK Top 40 for 37 consecutive weeks.

February 11th

1989 

Paula Abdul started a three-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Straight Up'. Her debut studio album Forever Your Girl (1988) became one of the most successful debut albums at that time, selling seven million copies in the United States and setting a record for the most No.1 singles from a debut album on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: 'Straight Up', 'Forever Your Girl', 'Cold Hearted', and 'Opposites Attract'.

February 12th

1977

Barbra Streisand's soundtrack album A Star Is Born hits #1 in the US. Her fourth album to top the tally - following People (1964), Stoney End (1971), and The Way We Were (1974) - it features the #1 hit "Evergreen."

1996 

Take That split up, the biggest band of the 90s announced their demise in front of the world's press at The Hilton in Manchester, the band had achieved 7 No.1 singles & 2 No.1 albums. They released one more single and a Greatest Hits album. (Take That reformed in 1996 and have now scored another 5 No.1 albums in the UK).

February 14th

1955 

Ruby Murray was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Softly, Softly'. The Belfast-born recording and TV star of the mid 50s was the first act to score five simultaneous Top 20 hits.

February 15th

1969 

Sly and the Family Stone started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Everyday People', their first No.1.

February 16th

1999 

Robbie Williams won three awards at this year's Brit's. The singer won Best British solo artist, Best Single for 'Angels' and Best Video for 'Millennium.' Manic Street Preachers won Best British Group, Natalie Imbruglia won Best International Female artist and Best Newcomer, Best International Group went to The Corrs.

February 17th

1969

Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash recorded 'Girl From The North Country' together in Nashville at CBS Studios. The track appeared on Dylan's 'Nashville Skyline' album.
