The Beatles scored their first No.1 best seller in the US when I Want to Hold Your Hand reached the top of the Cash Box Magazine music chart. 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' became the Beatles' best-selling single worldwide, selling more than 12 million copies. It was the first Beatles record to be made using four-track recording equipment.

The soundtrack of the film The Sound of Music was at No.1 on the UK album chart. With music and lyrics by Rodgers and Hammerstein the album was released in 1965 by RCA Victor and is one of the most successful soundtrack albums in history, having sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. It was the Best Selling Album in the UK in 1965, 1966 and 1968 and the second-best-selling of the decade, spending a total of 70 weeks at No.1 on the UK Chart.

TLC started a four-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Creep' the group's first US No.1, it made No.6 in the UK the following year. The lyrics portray the singers as women who cheat on their unfaithful lovers for "some affection". This context was controversial within the group, and strongly opposed by member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, who threatened to wear black tape over her mouth on its accompanying music video.

Arctic Monkeys went to No.1 on the UK album chart with their debut album Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not. The Sheffield-based band's album became the fastest-selling debut in chart history after shifting more than 360,000 copies in its first week of release. The album's title was taken from a line from the novel Saturday Night and Sunday Morning written by Alan Sillitoe.

Paul Simon went back to No.1 on the UK album chart with Graceland, (the album stayed on the chart for a total 163 weeks). 'Graceland' later won the 1987 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, while the title song won the 1988 Grammy Award for Record of the Year.

More than 100,000 votes were cast in the poll which looked back over the 10 years since the station began in 2002. Arctic Monkeys' 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' was voted into second place, and Elbow's 'One Day Like This' in third.
