Why can't Deezer just play the song from the artist I searched for?

I’m using the Deezer web version on Chrome/Mac.

  1. I search for the Artist I want to listen to
  2. I click on Tracks
  3. I click on a track to play

Expected: play the track that I selected, then play the next track from the list of songs from the same artists.

Actual: play the track that I selected, then play some random algorithmic selected song that I don’t want.

Solution: Either play the one song I selected and stop or play the next song in the list of songs from that artist.

For example:

I search for Fleetwood Mac and click ‘Tracks’. I select a track I want to listen to ‘Little lies’, note how the next track in the list of songs is ‘Big love’.

The track plays and the queue shows the 1 song ‘Little lies’. When the song is finished a completely random song (addicted to love - robert palmer) starts playing and appears in the queue.

I never selected ‘addicted to love’ and it only shows after the selected song is finished. Where is the ‘don’t automix’ button?

I expect:

  • Deezer stops playing after the first song finished
  • Deezer plays the next song in the list of songs from the artists (in the example above this would be ‘big love’
  • A very clear UI element that allows me to stop automatic suggestions

Deezer thinks I want:

  • A completely random and unrelated song to start playing.

If I want to auto mix or auto play random songs let me initiate that instead of making it default without a button to disable it. Also make it easier to play songs from a single artists instead of requiring to create a playlist, manually fill the queue or select a specific album.

Hey @why123321

In the search you start a mix with a track. This behavior is relatively new. I've often read from users that they don't like it that much. :expressionless:

If you start the mix on an artist's page, other artists will also come up, although you might expect only tracks from the desired artist to come up. :expressionless:

Only when you start the music within the 'Top Tracks' of an artist, the other top titles of this one artist are also played. :smirk:

Maybe @Yula can write something about whether the topic is already being discussed internally or not.

Hey everyone, thanks for your feedback. Sorry if we didn't live up to your expectations.
Just so you know, our developers deal with a ton of requests every day, so it's tough to address them all. There are also various reasons why certain features can be tricky to implement, like:

-Compatibility problems with different devices.
-Legal and licensing restrictions we have to follow.
-Technical challenges that require a lot of time for development and testing.

We really appreciate your understanding and patience as we work hard to improve our app Deezer.

Do you want to create an idea and start voting on it?

See this new idea where I also listed some related threads:

While searching for related ideas, I noticed that the forum software cannot choose the Ideas category for exclusive searches anymore.

I notice on my desktop this issue has not been solved yet, a year down de road.  one should be able to play search track list, in stead it goes to a mix after the first song played.  really annoying.

top and then send it directly to the play queue sometimes works, but most of the times does not.

Ooops sorry for the late reply!

Yes @dee_dirk is right as usual, you are not playing the tracks you are playing a mix inspired by the tracks.

It is not something that is being discussed internally, but I will keep an eye on how many people bring this up and if it is a significant number I’ll escalate it!

If its not being discussed, it should be. If you click the play button on an artist, you expect to hear that artist’s songs, not some random mix with a bunch of other artists thrown in. It is really frustrating.

I left Spotify for Deezer because I felt Spotify doesn’t listen to their customers, I’m starting to feel like Deezer is the same. My biggest and almost only bug bear with Spotify is that they cannot play a playlist in random mode without repeating the same few songs over and over.

My biggest frustrations with Deezer:

  • 7 years later, still no gapless playback - try listening to a Dark Side of the Moon without gapless, or a live album or a classic concert. You would not enjoy the breaks on the music. Yes, there is a workaround of using a web browser - but that is a workaround, not how it should work.
  • 2 years later, on this particular issue, and still no resolution. Click on play on an artist’s picture get a bunch of songs that have nothing to do with that artist.
  • There is still a 3 device limit - why? I can only play on one device at a time anyway. Let me see: I have a PC, a Laptop, a Phone, a Hi-Fi, multiple TVs, a tablet, a car - oh wait. I broke the device limit a few devices ago.😵 No, I don’t want to have to keep managing devices. No, I don’t want to always have to consider if I allocate a particular device to Deezer or not - I should be able to play Deezer on all the devices I want, without having to mess about with anything. I pay for the service, and I can only play on one device at a time. There shouldn’t be a restriction on the number of devices, its not like I can share my account with someone else, if they started playing, I wouldn’t be able to. If the restriction can’t be lifted, 3 devices is ridiculously low.
  • Handover between devices is iffy at best. When it works - which is not always - it doesn’t pick the track that was playing on the previous device from where it was, it starts again. Particularly frustrating if listening to a podcast. This is something that Spotify does exceedingly well. It has done it for many years, surely Deezer should be able to do it too?
  • When I choose “don’t play this artist”, I mean don’t play it for me anywhere. Not on recommendations, not on recommended playlists, or anything else.
  • Flow. Great idea, but why does it keep choosing artists I never heard off? Why a bias towards non-mainstream artists? Is it cheaper for Deezer?

Surely it is more technically challenging to generate a mix with random artists that an algorithm identifies as similar to the Artist you want to play then to just play the artist you searched for?

If I open the artist’s page, and play their top tracks, it plays only that Artist. Surely, clicking Play on the artist’s picture should do the same?

Or the “Legal and licensing restrictions we have to follow” mean you have to play other artists?

“We really appreciate your understanding and patience as we work hard to improve our app Deezer.”

Deezer is very good at many things, it is frustrating that certain features are just not there. I does make me consider returning to another provider. How many years does Deezer need to fix things like gapless play?

Apologies of going on a rant about other issues, rather than the topic at hand, but I’m very frustrated with Deezer.  Made all the more frustrating because I do like most of what Deezer does and I don’t want to leave for some other service - meaning that if I stay, I will have to live with all the issues I listed for the foreseeable future, as Deezer doesn’t seem willing or able to fix them. All the things I mentioned have been mentioned multiple times before on the Deezer forums, and none of them are fixed.

I understand that Deezer can’t please everyone, or make every change, but you do have a very frustrated customer in me.

I’m also looking to switch now after being driven crazy by this “feature” and having my other family members on my family plan plead with me to switch off of Deezer and move on to Spotify or ANYTHING that doesn’t have this “feature”.

Just letting you guys know because I don’t think you’re fixing it due to the fact that this is 3 years on going so I’m already looking for replacements.  It’s so insanely stupid.  You hear of a new artist and there’s no way to play thru the artist’s top tracks.  It plays one song and then random other artists.

The thing is the solution is simple.  Add 3 Play buttons: Mix, Top, All.  Mix - uses your algorithms.  Top - plays through the top tracks of this artist only.  All - plays thru all tracks of this artist.  It’s THAT FREAKING EASY to stop the annoyance of a lot of people.  Example below.

By the time they fix this (if they ever do) I’ll probably be on another service but man, it’s mind blowing how dumb this is.

hey there @bichen77

sounds as if you have a few frustrations going on, but specifically to the one I quoted, all you need to do is tap the first song (or any) in the “Top tracks” section (I circled) and away you go. It will play all those songs in order (unless you activate shuffle).

enjoy your music

That’s weird.  I tried that and it didn’t work for me.  It moved on to a different artist and I tried it like 10x in a row, clicking on the first one in the list, then seeing what song came up next (was always the same different artist).

But after your message, I refreshed everything (hard reload), and it is working as you stated.  Thanks for putting up with my rant, but it was definitely skipping to a different artist earlier.  I guess it’s good to know that if that ever happens again I should just force refresh.

Thanks.

So, I just joined Deezer, having come from Spotify. Frustrated that I ask to play an artist only to experience every other artist. That means that I actually have no choice - so why am I paying a super inflated monthly payment when I don’t get to listen to what I want? The only benefit is that I don’t get ads thrown at me; but in reality I do have ads - they’re just from Deezer, pumping their own product: mixes, flows, artist updates.

And that’s why I’ll be using Bandcamp for artists that I want to support: because the artist gets more money and I get to listen to what I want and actually OWN, rather than rent the music: and for general listening I’ll just use a free version of a steaming platform as if it were a radio: which is exactly what these paid streaming platforms are acting like.
