Why can't Deezer just play the song from the artist I searched for?

I’m using the Deezer web version on Chrome/Mac.

  1. I search for the Artist I want to listen to
  2. I click on Tracks
  3. I click on a track to play

Expected: play the track that I selected, then play the next track from the list of songs from the same artists.

Actual: play the track that I selected, then play some random algorithmic selected song that I don’t want.

Solution: Either play the one song I selected and stop or play the next song in the list of songs from that artist.

For example:

I search for Fleetwood Mac and click ‘Tracks’. I select a track I want to listen to ‘Little lies’, note how the next track in the list of songs is ‘Big love’.

The track plays and the queue shows the 1 song ‘Little lies’. When the song is finished a completely random song (addicted to love - robert palmer) starts playing and appears in the queue.

I never selected ‘addicted to love’ and it only shows after the selected song is finished. Where is the ‘don’t automix’ button?

I expect:

  • Deezer stops playing after the first song finished
  • Deezer plays the next song in the list of songs from the artists (in the example above this would be ‘big love’
  • A very clear UI element that allows me to stop automatic suggestions

Deezer thinks I want:

  • A completely random and unrelated song to start playing.

If I want to auto mix or auto play random songs let me initiate that instead of making it default without a button to disable it. Also make it easier to play songs from a single artists instead of requiring to create a playlist, manually fill the queue or select a specific album.

Hey @why123321

In the search you start a mix with a track. This behavior is relatively new. I've often read from users that they don't like it that much. :expressionless:

If you start the mix on an artist's page, other artists will also come up, although you might expect only tracks from the desired artist to come up. :expressionless:

Only when you start the music within the 'Top Tracks' of an artist, the other top titles of this one artist are also played. :smirk:

Maybe @Yula can write something about whether the topic is already being discussed internally or not.

Another example. In the ‘recently played’ section it shows ‘queens of the stone age’ with a play button. I click play and a QOTSA songs starts playing. As expected. But when the song is over a random song from a random artist starts playing.

How does this make sense? Show an artist but only play one song before ruining it.

Clicking this play icon in the recently played list gives you exactly 1 song from Queens of the Stone Age before playing some random artist. Expected: A full queue with QOTSA songs.

Ooops sorry for the late reply!

Yes @dee_dirk is right as usual, you are not playing the tracks you are playing a mix inspired by the tracks.

It is not something that is being discussed internally, but I will keep an eye on how many people bring this up and if it is a significant number I’ll escalate it!

Please count me in as hating that new feature dearly.  It was available on the iOS app earlier, as far as I know, and then found its way into the desktop app and web player, also on Windows a few months ago. Nobody asked for that feature, I think, i.e. I don’t remember seeing a related idea, but I might be wrong with that.

I often sort search results in Deezer by a column, and before that “feature” I could even play the result list in the order that I chose to sort it by which no other streaming app could or can do, as far as I know. So another great unique option destroyed by Deezer, sorry to say. I would prefer to be able to switch this behaviour somewhere in the settings.

A workaround would be creating a playlist from the search result and playing that, but this is not very comfortable. Also trying to highlight all found tracks with the checkbox on top and then send it directly to the play queue sometimes works, but most of the times does not.

Same here, just got the family account but will cancel if this isn’t sorted ASAP.

Also made a request for it as a feature, but it was removed/moved to questions...

@Yula Thanks for your response. To me that behaviour doesn’t make sense but I’m glad that internally at Deezer it does since it being discussed

There is another question in my comment: “Where is the ‘don’t automix’ button?”. The ‘suggested’ song just appears when the initial song is finished. It seems impossible on the Deezer Website to play only 1 song from an artist without creating a playlist with 1 song in it. Again this might make sense ‘internally at Deezer’ but it’s just bad product design. I don’t want automix when I don’t start an automix.

I hoped Deezer was a Spotify replacement but too often the product just doesn’t make sense.

When I search for an artist I expect to find the discography, and then be able to play a full album uninterrupted. No mixed lists and definitely not every other song from some other random artist that don’t even fit the same genre.

@Yula Frankly, this is a really bad experience. It’s counter intuitive to what the end user would expect. The mix is a good feature, but only as an option and should definitely not be the default. It’s confusing and frustrating when I want to listen to an artist or even a Deezer created playlist (eg 100% Metallica) and random artist starts playing. This 100% needs to be escalated and fixed!

I guess only making some noice on social media would make them change this, it’s been like this the past years I’ve used it.

Something like “Deezer, the only music platform that won’t let you play artist discography”
