The "Shuffle my music" feature is getting worse

As long as I do not use the Android App or wait a few hours after using it, there seem to be no more issues with the Web Browser on my notebook. I am still experimenting, though. For example, I tried Flow and noticed the genre, favorite artists, and even almost all of my favorite songs included in Flow were exactly the same as those in the "Shuffle my music" feature when it malfunctions.

The interference between Flow and the "Shuffle my music" feature, as well as between the Android App on my phone and the "Shuffle my music" feature in the Web Browser on my notebook, is quite peculiar. I hope my tests can help Deezer team reproduce the problem and understand what has been happening for over a month now.

New Update: I listened to my monthly top smart playlist with the Android App on my phone. After that, the "Shuffle my music" feature in the Web Browser on my notebook started working very poorly again. It only added about ten songs to the queue, always from the same limited group of artists... in short, the usual issues I have been reporting for a month now. However, after waiting a few hours without using Deezer at all, it fixed itself.

To summarize: "Shuffle my music" is still unusable from the App but works properly from the Web Browser. However, if I use the App, it negatively affects the Web Browser version as well, even though the "Synchronized Queue-list" feature is disabled. I also find that after listening to content through the App, I must wait several hours before I can enjoy the "Shuffle my music" feature working correctly again in the Web Browser and adding 50 songs to my listening queue from all my favorite tracks, albums, and playlists with almost none or very few repetitions between different sets of fifty songs.

shuffle my music is my favorite feature!

I’ve turned off Synchronize on all three instances where I use Deezer (Android app, Windows app, web browser) and started new Shuffles on all three:

  • Windows app and web browser both gave me short Shuffle queues (11 tracks and 17 tracks respectively).  All songs were from my favorites, but as before, it’s mainly picking from the same dozen or so artists.  Both queues had a lot of artist overlap, even though my library has almost 400 artist favorites.
  • Tried a second time on the Windows app and it made a Shuffle entirely of stuff NOT in my favorites, and not related at all to genres that I listen to.
  • On the Android app I tried three times.  First it gave me a Shuffle with 15 songs all from my favorites, but again only picking from the same dozen or so artists as on the Windows app and web browser.
  • Second try on the Android app gave me a Shuffle with 14 songs, 2 of which were from my favorites, and the rest were NOT in my favorite artists, tracks or albums.  But those other 12 were at least in similar genres to what I listen to.
  • Third try on the Android app - 13 tracks, and only 1 from my favorites.
  • It’s like the more Shuffle is used, the worse it gets.

I appreciate the efforts of @awesomemac and hope they will lead to positive results. I have done some additional tests myself, and here are the steps I followed:

  1. I have turned off the "Synchronized Queue-list" feature on all my devices.
  2. I haven't used the "Shuffle my music" feature for a few days, either on the Web Browser of my notebook or through the Android App on my phone.
  3. I started the "Shuffle my music" feature using the Web Browser on my notebook, and it worked perfectly. It added 50 songs to my listening queue, selected from all my favorite tracks, albums, and playlists, without repeating any songs between different sets of fifty. In fact, it should have a thousands options of mine to shuffle, and I had not listened to most of them in the past month, making it a very enjoyable experience.
  4. However, when I turned on the "Synchronized Queue-list" feature, the "Shuffle my music" function in the Web Browser on my notebook began to malfunction again. It added only about ten or twenty songs at most, always from the same small group of artists, resulting in frequent and likely repetitions. I have seen these songs numerous times since the issue began a month ago, and they keep coming as if I had only a few dozen or hundreds of songs available for selection. Additionally, it seemed to focus exclusively on the same genre, which is quite unusual.
  5. After disabling the "Synchronized Queue-list" again, logging off, and waiting about half an hour before logging back into Deezer, the "Shuffle my music" feature in the Web Browser on my notebook has returned to normal operation, as described in point 3.
  6. The "Shuffle my music" feature in the Android App on my phone has consistently performed poorly, as I mentioned in point 4, both when turning on and off the "Synchronized Queue-list".

@YannickG and @geo79, maybe you could try this as well to see if you experience the same issue I did by following my steps, or if it continues to add songs unrelated to your favorite tracks, albums, and playlists.

In any case, the problem has unfortunately not been resolved yet. ☹️

I’m going to try to see if there are artists that never do appear in “Shuffle my music”.

I mean, if you have hundreds of favorites but Deezer's "Shuffle my music" feature consistently selects only the same dozen artists, there seems to be an issue, don't you think?

FYI:

  • 547 favourite songs
  • 314 albums
  • 176 artists

It’s a bit difficult to say which artists Deezer doesn’t select.

With YTM I have the same favourites and I can use their Supermix. Always 100 songs selected from your favourite artists and changes every day. It includes favourite songs and not favourite songs.

I think Deezer should take a look at the Supermix from YTM and do the same to their Shuffle my music.

Also, consider how many artists are included in this feature compared to the number of artists you have among your favorite tracks, albums, and playlists. Are there any artists that "Shuffle my music" never selects?

Is is the Shuffle my music from today:

Days, hours, or minutes should not make any difference, or at least they did not use to. I remember when I could still get 50 songs, and by using the "Shuffle my music" feature multiple times, it was very rare to get a track that had already been added during the previous shuffle.

I noticed you have only 23 tracks instead of the expected 50, and nearly all of them are repeated songs. The issue started in the same way for me about a month ago. Then the more I used it, the more problematic it became, until it began adding songs that were completely unrelated to my favorite tracks, albums, and playlists.

Yes, but I have to say, that I started both “shuffle playlists” almost after each other.

Same songs on the web, now couple of hours later:

So, let’s see tomorrow...

There are already many repetitions of songs between the two, aren't there? 🤔

Now, I can not wait to find out how your next test will turn out.

Tried it on both an Android phone and tablet.

On both I get a good playlist.

Both 23 songs and with artists I like and are in my favorites:

Now I’m curious if tomorrow the playlist will be the same or something new?

@Leonídia.Deezer Once is not enough. Please try to start the "Shuffle my music" feature multiple times a day, with other albums or playlists in between to clear the queue, and see if it always gets stuck on the same few artists or worse, at some point it even starts adding songs that have nothing to do with your favorite tracks, albums, and playlists.

I stopped using it for a few days and trying again today with the Web Browser on my notebook it seems to have returned to normal (it adds 50 randomly chosen songs from all my favorite tracks, albums, and playlists to the listening queue), but I'm not getting my hopes up, because it had already happened last week and then it got worse again.

I then tried with the Android App on my phone and yes, it is back to my favorite tracks, albums, and playlists too, but there are only 12 and it's still fixated on the same few artists (I have the "Synchronized Queue-list" feature turned off, so the devices can behave differently).

On Android app version 8.0.18.7, it’s the same exact problem too - a short shuffle list of 12 songs, all of which are NOT from my favorites.  I use shuffle all the time to listen to the artists and albums I’ve faved, so this total failure of the shuffle system is a massive bummer.  It used to be that I could hit shuffle in the morning and listen to my library all day while I work, and it would periodically add more songs from my Favorites.  Now it’s worthless.

@Leonídia.Deezer Thanks for your attention on this.  I mainly use Deezer on a Windows 11 laptop.  It’s the Deezer app version 6.0.190.0.  But now it’s even more messed up.  Previously it would at least pick songs from my Favorites, even though it was super repetitive, but now, hitting “Shuffle My Music” gives me a list of 12 tracks that are most definitely NOT in my favorite artists OR favorite albums.  It’s just a bunch of random music pulled from who knows where. Something is very messed up.

It does the same thing in the web browser version.  “Shuffle My Music” creates a list of random songs that are not in my library at all.  It’s now progressed the same way @Marcormark described.

Hello @awesomemac thanks for the help Can you reproduce the same issue here described?

Hi @geo79 @Marcormark I have check across other channels internally and found a couple more of similar complaints.

Could you tell me more about devices you use, OS version and Deezer app versions?

I have already open an thread internally about the matter, but would be great to have those info’s. They always ask.

Nevertheless, today I have tried “Shuffle My music” from the web and it created a 50 track queue with 100% tracks from my favourites.

On my Android device, it only created a queue with 16 tracks but again 100% from my favourites.

So please can you run some tests and check if issue is still present. Thanks

@Leonídia.Deezer: can you tell us if Deezer is aware of this “shuffle issue” and that someone is working on this?

The Android app is exhibiting the same behavior as the Windows app.  Shuffle only produces a list of 10-20 songs, all from the same very small, repetitive selection of artists even though there are 400 artists in my favorites.  It ends up picking a lot of the same songs each time.  Something is messed up because it didn’t do this until very very recently.

@geo79 Yes! A month ago, it started exactly like this for me too. If you can contact Deezer Support to report your issue... I did it a few weeks ago, and I'm still waiting for a solution, but maybe the more of us there are, the more likely they will listen to us and fix it, who knows.

@awesomemac Until a month ago, I would have answered like you. "Shuffle my music" has always been one of my favorite features of Deezer, and I had never had any problems before. Now, unfortunately, I have seen all kinds of issues: little variety in the songs, which get repeated every 2-3 restarts of the function, despite having hundreds of favorite tracks, albums, and playlists to choose from; or little variety in the artists, it always fixates on the same dozen, even though my favorite artists are many more; finally, it even adds to the queue songs that have nothing to do with my favorite tracks, albums, and playlists.

Something broke in July and it is definitely still happening, but I can't explain why only for some users and why it seems to gradually spread to others...

On an Android phone the shuffle is alright, but I can understand your frustration when getting the same songs over and over.
