Question

Windows 10 close to tray broken

OS: Windows 10 22H2
App: Deezer for Desktop v8.0.10

After the latest update, the close to tray behaviour is broken. Minimize should minimize the window keeping it available in the task bar (which it does), while close should make the app disappear from the task bar, keeping the icon in the system tray and the app running. Instead, it just closes the app.

So we have to keep the app open on the foreground just to be able to play music now… By the way, the tray icon behaviour continues to be broken (clicking it or double clicking it doesn’t open/give focus to the app window).

There is a related option in the settings, maybe the update has changed it?

Thanks for the reply!

I see no related option under settings. Going to File => Preferences => App Preferences there’s just some unrelated options:

A summary of disk usage (with a Clear button)
Do not recommend explicit content (swich: off)
Desktop notifications (switch: off)
Launch Deezer on startup (switch: on)

The other preference section have nothing regarding window behaviour, neither has the “Window” context menu or “Theme and Colour”.

Sorry that I didn’t post a screenshot but I get an error when I either insert an image or attachment here.

Sorry, mixed it up with the Spotify desktop app which has a related option in their settings, and I was changing these yesterday. 🙃

Same behaviour on windows 11 26H2, same deezer version. I don’t like to have too much tabs open when I do Alt+Tab. So I would enjoy the fix !

Finally. After years of pretending that the X button meant something other than "close the application", Deezer now follows the same convention as practically every other Windows app on Earth.
That's not innovation. That's just correcting a long-standing UX mistake.
Thanks for fixing it.

When the end result means that you cannot send the app to the system tray by no means whatsoever it’s not an improvement, no.

Lots of long standing respectable apps use the close button to close to tray because the behaviour makes sense: you want them running most of the time without cluttering the task bar. For example: Hard Disk Sentinel, NVidia GeForce app, f.lux, OpenRGB, Google Drive, Fan Control, qBittorrent, Avast, KeePassXC, etc.

The least they could do is implement a similar functionality to qBitorrent’s settings: Optional checkboxes for “Minimize app to notification area” and “Close app to notification area”.

Let me remind you that you have the option of right clicking the tray icon and selecting “Quit Deezer” or use the currently opened Window to go to Menu => Window => Close.

Hello, same problems here : close button do not send the app to tray anymore, it closes it. And double click on the tray icon while app is open does nothing, just like the previous version, whereas it opened the app a few months ago.

I had to rely on a tiny, open source app called RBTray (https://github.com/benbuck/rbtray) to get Deezer out of the way. It alows you to send the app to the system tray by either Shift-right-clicking its title bar or using the Control-Alt-Down hotkey. It also alows you to open Deezer from the system tray with a single click.

The caveats:

1) It doesn’t capture the close button functionality, so if you’re used to “minimizing” the app that way you’ll continue closing it by mistake midplay.
2) Since Deezer already has a tray icon you end up with a duplicate icon. You can hide Deezer’s original icon in the hidden area of the tray, but be aware that you lose the “hover to see what’s playing” functionality.

Anyway, ridiculous to have to resort to this. Any app that has an option to run on startup should have an option to minimize it to tray.
