American singer-songwriter, musician and actor James Osterberg, (Iggy Pop). Member of The Stooges and solo artist, Pop is sometimes credited with the invention of stage diving. Hits include: 'Lust for Life', 'The Passenger', 'Real Wild Child', and 'I Wanna Be Your Dog'. The Stooges' album Raw Power has proved an influence on artists such as Sex Pistols The Smiths and Nirvana.

British-American rock musician Peter Frampton who with The Herd, had the 1968 UK No.5 single 'I Don't Want Our Loving To Die', with Humble Pie, the 1969 UK No.4 single 'Natural Born Bugie'. As a solo artists he scored the 1976 UK No.10 single 'Show Me The Way' taken from his live release Frampton Comes Alive!. Frampton has worked with David Bowie, George Harrison, Harry Nilsson. Frampton is known for his work as a guitar player and particularly with a Talkbox.

Steve Clark, guitarist with Def Leppard, who had a 1987 UK No.6 single with ‘Animal’, a 1987 worldwide No.1 album with Hysteria and a 1988 US No.1 single with ‘Love Bites’. Clark died on January 8th 1991, aged 30 after a night of heavy alcohol consumption combined with prescription drugs.

Tony Christie, UK singer, 1971 UK No.18 single (‘Is This The Way To) Amarillo’, re-released in aid of Comic Relief in 2005 becoming a UK No.1 with comedian Peter Kay. This broke the record set over 18 years previously by Jackie Wilson. His 'Reet Petite' topped the chart in Dec 1986; 29 Years, 1 Month, and 11 Days after it first entered the chart. The new record set by Christie was 33 Years, 3 Months, and 27 Days.

Born 1938 - Maurice Williams


Maurice Williams, from American doo-wop group The Zodiacs, who had the 1960 US No.1 & 1961 UK No.14 single 'Stay'. At 1:36, 'Stay' is the shortest recording ever to reach No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. The song was also a hit for Jackson Browne, The Four Seasons and The Hollies. The inclusion of 'Stay' on the soundtrack to the film Dirty Dancing in 1987 led to the song selling more records than it had during its original release. Williams died on 5 August 2024 age 86.

Willie Nelson, country music singer-songwriter, (He was born on April 29, 1933, but his birth was recorded on April 30). Nelson has acted in over 30 films, co-authored several books, and has been involved in activism for the use of biofuels and the legalization of marijuana. Along with Neil Young and John Mellencamp, he set up Farm Aid in 1985 to assist and increase awareness of the importance of family farms. He wrote the country classic 'Crazy' a hit for Patsy Cline.

American singer and actor Bing Crosby who recorded an estimated 2,600 songs in his lifetime including ‘White Christmas’, which was written by Irving Berlin. Crosby had 317 other hits in the USA. He became the first performer to pre-record his radio shows and master his commercial recordings onto magnetic tape. He died of a heart attack on a golf course in Madrid, Spain, on October 14, 1977.

Nicholas Ashford, from husband-and-wife songwriting-production team Ashford and Simpson, who had the 1985 UK No. 3 single 'Solid'. They wrote hits such as: 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough', 'You're All I Need To Get By', 'Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing', and 'Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)'. Ashford died August 22, 2011, of complications from throat cancer, in New York.

In 2011, Adele became the first artist to achieve the feat of two top five hits in both the singles chart and the albums chart simultaneously since The Beatles in 1964. She is the first artist to sell more than 3 million copies of an album in a year in the UK, and Adele is the first female in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 to have three singles in the top 10 at the same time.

Born 1946 - Jerry Nolan

Jerry Nolan, drums, The New York Dolls, 1973 album New York Dolls. Nolan joined the New York Dolls in the autumn of 1972 to replace Billy Murcia. He left the Dolls together with Johnny Thunders in the spring of 1975. The two then placed a call to bassist Richard Hell, formerly of the Neon Boys and Television, to form The Heartbreakers. Nolan died on 14th January 1992 from a fatal stroke.
