1971 was born Delores O'Riordan

Dolores O’Riordan, singer, songwriter with The Cranberries who had the 1994 hit singles ‘Linger’, 'Dreams' and 'Zombie'. The bands 1993 album Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can’t We spent a total of 86 weeks on the UK chart. In 2020, the official music video for ‘Zombie’ became the first song by an Irish band to reach over one billion views on YouTube. O’Riordan died unexpectedly on 15 January 2018 while she was in London, England, for a recording session.

September 7th

2024 

Linkin Park announced a new singer, Emily Armstrong, would be joining them for their new album and tour. The group's former lead singer, Chester Bennington, took his own life in 2017. The band announced their new line-up ahead of the launch of their forthcoming album From Zero and a new world tour.

September 8th

1979 was born Pink

Pink, (Alicia Moore), who had the 2001 UK No.2 single 'Get The Party Started', the 2001 US & UK No.1 single with Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim and Mya Lady Marmalade. Pink has become one of the most successful artists of her generation, having sold over 110 million records worldwide.

September 9th

2024 

Beyoncé was snubbed by the Country Music Awards, despite having one of the biggest country hits of the year with 'Texas Hold 'Em'. When the nominees for the ceremony were announced, the star was notably absent - with not a single nomination. Beyoncé had widely been expected to gain recognition at the awards, with fans speculating she could become the first black woman to be shortlisted for Album of The Year, for Cowboy Carter.

September 10th

2021 

ABBA returned to the top-ten of the UK Singles Chart for the first time in almost forty years when 'Don't Shut Me Down' debuted at No.9, becoming their 20th top-ten single. The group's last single to reach the top-ten of the UK charts was 'One of Us', which peaked at No.3 in December 1981.

September 11th

1965 was born Moby

Moby, (Richard Hall), producer, vocalist, 1991 UK No.10 single 'Go'. His album Play was the biggest-selling UK indie album of 2000, spending 81 weeks on the chart and going platinum in over 20 countries. Moby is a descendant of 'Moby Dick' author Herman Melville. In addition to his music career, Moby is recognised for his veganism and advocacy for animal rights and humanitarian causes.

September 12th

2020 

Taylor Swift was at No.1 on the US chart with her eighth studio album Folklore. The album had over 80.6 million global streams on Spotify and earned the Guinness World Record for the most opening-day streams for an album by a female artist. The album broke the Apple Music record for the most-streamed pop album in a day and the Amazon Music indie/alternative record. Folklore and its songs received five Grammy Award nominations at the 63rd ceremony, winning the Album of the Year.

September 13th

1993  was born Niall Horan

Niall Horan, from English-Irish pop boy band One Direction who formed after finishing third in the seventh series of The X Factor in 2010. Scored the 2011 UK No.1 single 'What Makes You Beautiful' and the 2013 No.1 'One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)'.

September 14th

1988 was born Muni Long

American singer and songwriter Muni Long. Her debut studio album Jukebox was released in 2009. She then spent the following decade co-writing songs for other artists, including the hit singles 'Promise This' for Cheryl, 'California King Bed' for Rihanna, 'Worth It' for Fifth Harmony, 'Imagine' for Ariana Grande and the global hit 'Timber' for Pitbull.

1966 

The Small Faces were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'All Or Nothing', their only No.1 hit. According to Kay Marriott, Steve Marriott's mother, Steve wrote the song about his split with ex-fiancee Sue Oliver, though first wife Jenny Rylance states that Marriott told her he wrote the song for her as a result of her split with Rod Stewart.

2022 

Robbie Williams overtook Elvis Presley (13 No.1s), to become the solo artist with the most UK No.1 albums ever when his latest album XXV topped the UK chart. Only The Beatles had more UK No.1 albums than Robbie with 15 across their career.

1985 was born Jonathan Jacob Walker

Jonathan Jacob Walker, bassist, with American rock band Panic! at the Disco who scored the 2008 Australian No.1 and US & UK No.2 album Pretty.Odd.

1962  was born Joanne Catherall

Joanne Catherall, singer with The Human League. Formed in Sheffield, England in 1977 the group attained widespread commercial success with their third album Dare in 1981. The album contained four hit singles, including the UK/US No.1 hit 'Don't You Want Me'.

1958  was born Lita Ford

American guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Lita Ford. She was a member of The Runaways and then embarked on a successful glam metal solo career that hit its peak in the late 1980s. The 1989 single 'Close My Eyes Forever, a duet with Ozzy Osbourne, remains Ford's most successful song, reaching No. 8 on the US Billboard Hot 100. (1989 UK No.47 single with Ozzy Osbourne 'Close My Eyes Forever').

1946 was born Mick Rogers

Mick Rogers, English rock guitarist, singer and songwriter, chiefly known for his time with Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Their hits include covers of Bruce Springsteen's 'For You', 'Blinded by the Light' and 'Spirit in the Night'.

2019 

English musician Sam Fender was at No.1 on the UK chart with his debut studio album Hypersonic Missiles. The album drew heavy comparisons to Bruce Springsteen due to Fender's "lyricism and his vignettes of working-class struggle."

1957 was born Nick Cave

Australian singer, songwriter Nick Cave, who fronted the Birthday Party, one of the most extreme and confrontational post-punk bands of the early 1980s. He had the 1995 UK No.11 single with Kylie Minogue, 'Where The Wild Roses Grow'. In 2006, he formed the garage rock band Grinderman.

Sabrina Carpenter was at No.1 on the US album chart with her sixth studio album Short n' Sweet. Two singles, 'Espresso' and 'Please Please Please', preceded the album's release; both topped the Billboard Global 200 chart. Short n' Sweet and its tracks received eight nominations at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, and won for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance for 'Espresso'. Carpenter became one of the only fifteen artists in history to receive nominations in all four main General Field categories in a single night.

1971 was born Marty Cintron III

Marty Cintron III, from German pop band No Mercy, who had the 1997 UK No.2 single 'Where Do You Go'. The three American singers were originally brought together in Germany by producer Frank Farian, who founded the 1970s disco-pop group Boney M., and Milli Vanilli.

2022 

The American psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling, starring Harry Styles, topped the box office while his song 'As It Was' remained at No.1 on the US Hot 100. The film was directed by Olivia Wilde, who started dating Styles after meeting him on set.

1972 was born Shawn Stockman

Shawn Stockman, from American R&B vocal group Boyz II Men, who had the 1992 US & UK No.1 single 'End Of The Road' which set a new record for longevity, staying at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for thirteen weeks, breaking the decades-old record held by Elvis Presley.

1984 was born Avril Lavigne

Canadian singer and songwriter Avril Lavigne. She had the 2002 US & UK No.3 single 'Complicated' and 2002 US No.2 & UK No.1 debut album is the best-selling album of the 21st century by a Canadian artist. Her 2007 worldwide No.1 single 'Girlfriend' was a worldwide success, peaking at the top spot of the charts in eight countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada and was Lavigne's first No.1 song in the United States. Lavigne is the youngest female to top the charts, aged 17 years and 3 months.

1982 was born St. Vincent

American musician, singer, songwriter, Annie Clark, known as St. Vincent. She began her music career as a member of the Polyphonic Spree. In 2012, she released Love This Giant, an album made in collaboration with David Byrne. She won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album with Daddy’s Home in 2022.

1948 was born Mark Farner

Mark Farner, American singer, guitarist and songwriter, best known as the lead singer and lead guitarist for Grand Funk Railroad who had the US No.1 single with their version of 'The Loco-Motion' which was produced by Todd Rundgren. They were the most successful US Heavy Metal band of the 70s selling over 20m albums.

September 30th

1947 -was born Marc Bolan

English guitarist, singer, songwriter, Marc Bolan (born Mark Feld), best known as the lead singer of the glam rock band T. Rex. In the late 1960s, he rose to fame as the founder and leader of the psychedelic folk band Tyrannosaurus Rex, with whom he released four critically acclaimed albums and had one minor hit, 'Debora'. He had the 1971 UK No.1 single 'Hot Love', plus over 20 other UK Top 40 singles, and the 1972 US No.10 single 'Bang A Gong (Get It On)'. Bolan strongly influenced artists of many genres. After seeing Bolan wearing Zandra Rhodes-designed outfits, Freddie Mercury enlisted Rhodes to design costumes for the next Queen tour in 1974. Bolan was the early guitar idol of Johnny Marr, who later found fame as the guitarist of the influential indie rock band the Smiths. Bolan was killed in a car accident on 16th September 1977 aged 29 a fortnight before his 30th birthday.
