This one has been a long time coming, with Cody Johnson first revealing he had a duet with Carrie Underwood up his sleeve in March 2023. However, when his next studio album, Leather, arrived later that year, fans were surprised and somewhat disappointed to see Carrie's name not appear on the tracklist.

It was then confirmed that Leather would be a double album and fortunately... Cody Johnson's long-awaited Carrie Underwood duet, 'I'm Gonna Love You', was finally released as the lead single on September 27, 2024.

'I'm Gonna Love You' takes the format of a classic country duet, with Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood choosing to keep the songwriting stripped back and intimate throughout. The production is sparse, with a brief but striking electric guitar solo towards the end of the song, the only deviation from the steady, undulating flow of 'I'm Gonna Love You', which seems to symbolize the stability of the love they sing about.

They asked him "Somewhere Over the Radio" and he was very intelligent and sincere. What is the story behind that song?

The Arkansas native moved to Nashville in 2014 to be a songwriter. He emerged as a thoughtful songwriter and equally compelling artist in 2019 with back-to-back No. 1 singles “Prayed for You” and “Everywhere but On.”

My friend Clint Lagerberg had that idea. We sat around just him and I, we wrote that song all day one day. I tried to do it right because it's a cool title and I want to tell a story. It's not about me, but it could have been me if I'd been from Kansas. I love songs that tell a story of how music changes lives and so does love.

I think one lyric that hits home for me is that I knew you'd go places, baby / I wish those places weren't so far away. I'm talking about leaving the house. When you're from a real small town in the south... Leaving home is hard. Almost all of my family lives in the same county we grew up in, so leaving was a big deal and it wasn't easy. Ultimately, I'm glad I did it because I wouldn't have been able to come to Nashville and be around songs and make a life out of music if I hadn't. But that didn't mean it was easy. I think we did a decent job of explaining that in an interesting way.
