National Metal Day is celebrated on November 11 because of a famous scene in the 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, where a guitarist claims his amplifiers go "one louder" to 11. The date 11/11/11 was also a significant starting point, and the holiday was officially launched by VH1 Classic in 2011.

The day is used to celebrate heavy metal music and culture, with many fans listening to their favorite bands, watching metal-related documentaries, and attending shows.
