During the whole month of March, we’re celebrating women’s music and reviewing all the iconic albums that are being released. Mixing music analysis, artist’s background recap and user’s reviews, we’ll tell you everything there is to love about those queens' new pieces of work.

From Johannesburg to the top of the charts, Tyla Laura Seethal or simply Tyla, is the new voice of South Africa enchanting the world with her infectious music and powerful lyrics.

At just 22 years old, the singer and songwriter has already accumulated a meteoric trajectory, marked by international awards, streaming records and a legion of passionate fans. Gustavo- one of our Brazilian Superusers, celebrates the release of her first album and introduces us to the new superstar.

Tyla was interested in music from an early age. Influenced by artists like Beyoncé and Rihanna, she began writing her own songs while still a teenager.

In 2019, her debut single, "Getting Late", with Kooldrink, achieved national success and gained attention of the recording industry. The following year, she signed a contract with Epic Records, the same label as Mariah Carey, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. The artist's entry into the record label led to the release of her first EP, "TYLA", which consolidated her name on the South African music scene. International recognition came in 2023 with the release of the single "Water", a song that went viral on social media, reaching the top of the charts in several countries and becoming a global anthem of female empowerment.

With an infectious beat and empowering lyrics, the song has become a global anthem and went viral on TikTok and Instagram, with millions of people creating their own videos set to the song. With its popularity and specialised critics praising the song's powerful lyrics and infectious melody, its success began to transcend smartphone screens and “Water” began to gain more and more visibility, which led to it reaching 21st place on Billboard Hot 100, consolidating her success on the world music charts, which allowed the singer to compete for the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she made history by becoming the first African artist to receive the award for Best African Music Performance.

The artist is a symbol of strength and inspiration for the new generation of African artists. Her music transcends borders and cultures, connecting with people of all backgrounds.

With undeniable talent, infectious charisma and a powerful voice, Tyla is a complete artist who is just beginning to write her story. Her debut album is a promising showcase from an artist with great potential, and we're excited for what's to come!

Lea, from the Deezer Community team, listened to the album and here’s what she thinks:
Tyla's new album is a refreshing blend of Amapiano and R&B influences, infused with amazing collaborations featuring Travis Scott, Tems, or Skillibeng. It's the perfect soundtrack to welcome Spring and promises to extend its appeal well into the Summer months.
With lyrics that resonate on a personal level, Tyla's album strikes a balance between introspection and celebration. The track "On and On" is even already making waves on TikTok !
Tyla's debut album is a testament to her creative prowess, offering a captivating mix of genres and collaborations that are sure to leave a lasting impression on listeners. Go Tyla 🌟
