Robots have been inspiring musicians for decades - from electronic trailblazers and synth-pop legends to rock classics and some seriously funny takes on the robot apocalypse. 🤖
So, switch on your circuits and let’s take a trip through 10 tracks where robots,  take centre stage!

1. “The Robots” - Kraftwerk

A true electronic classic! Released in 1978, Kraftwerk’s pioneering track combines minimalist synths, robotic rhythms and vocoder vocals. And, of course, that unforgettable message: “We are the robots.”
 

2. “Mr. Roboto” - Styx

Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto! 🤖 Styx’s 1983 synth-rock hit was inspired by factory automation, Japan and real-world controversies. It became one of the most recognisable robot-themed songs in pop culture and is part of the dystopian rock opera Kilroy Was Here.
 

3. “The Body Electric” - Rush

From Rush’s 1984 album Grace Under Pressure, this sci-fi rock track follows an android trying to escape a machine-controlled society and discover its own identity. Fun fact: the repeated binary code 1001001 translates to the letter “I” in ASCII.
 

4. “One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21” - The Flaming Lips

What happens when a robot starts developing feelings? 🤔 This 2002 track from Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots tells the story of a combat robot discovering human-like emotions, exploring empathy, love and what it means to be alive.
 

5. “I Robot” - The Alan Parsons Project

Released in 1977, this atmospheric, almost entirely instrumental track creates a futuristic world through funky bass, keyboards and choir vocals. It sets the tone for an album exploring AI and robotics, inspired by Isaac Asimov’s robot stories.
 

6. “Robots” - Flight of the Conchords

Also known as “The Humans Are Dead”, this comedy-rock classic imagines a future where robots have taken over. Delivered with a brilliantly deadpan robotic style, it includes everything from changing “yes” to “affirmative” to reducing dancing to just two styles: the robot and the robo-boogie. 🤖🕺
 

7. “Electric Barbarella” - Duran Duran

This 1997 synth-pop track takes us into slightly more… adult robot territory. 😏 Inspired by the sci-fi world of Barbarella, it describes a man’s fascination with an artificial companion made from “ultra-chrome, latex and steel”.
 

8. “Robot Man” - Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD)

Not every robot story is about machines taking over the world. Here, “robot man” becomes a metaphor for emotional armour and vulnerability. Andy McCluskey described the song as being about taking off that armour and allowing yourself to express who you really are.
 

9. “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?” - Tubeway Army

Gary Numan and Tubeway Army take us to a dystopian future populated by lifelike androids. Released in 1979, this pioneering synth-pop track combines two unfinished songs and is instantly recognisable thanks to its huge, unmistakable synthesizer riff.
 

10. “iRobot” - Jon Bellion

Not all robots are about the future. Released in 2016, Jon Bellion uses the robot metaphor to describe the cold, disconnected feeling of life after a breakup. Human emotions are replaced by “circuits and wires” in this melancholic pop track.
 

🤖 BONUS TRACK: “Robot Rock” - Daft Punk

Because obviously a robot playlist without Daft Punk could not be possible. 😎

Released in 2005, “Robot Rock” combines electronic music with heavy rock influences and a driving instrumental built around a sample from Breakwater’s “Release the Beast”. Add that iconic “rock, robot rock” vocal loop and you've got the perfect bonus track.
