“My Favorite Mistake” was the first single from The Globe Sessions, Sheryl Crow’s third studio album, released in 1998. The album represented a step forward from her two previous works: while Tuesday Night Music Club had stood out for its narrative ability and its successor, Sheryl Crow, for a sound closer to 1970s rock, in The Globe Sessions the singer was much more personal and confessional. Crow produced the album and approached many of its songs from her own experiences and emotions, to the point that the press at the time described the album as the most intimate work of her career. The album reached number 5 on the Billboard 200 and would go on to win the Grammy for Best Rock Album in 1999.

It was in this context that “My Favorite Mistake” appeared, a rock song with elements of country rock built around a romantic relationship marked by infidelity. Crow wrote the song with her frequent collaborator Jeff Trott, and later recounted that it came together remarkably quickly: she started playing bass while Trott played guitar, and from some initial lyrical ideas, they finished it in practically an hour. Its sound, with a highly recognizable guitar riff and an elegant yet powerful production, perfectly suited the character of The Globe Sessions.

The song was also shrouded in mystery regarding its possible inspiration. At the time, there was persistent speculation that it was dedicated to Eric Clapton, due to their past romantic relationship, but Crow always denied that the song was about him and refused to identify the man who inspired the story. Musically, “My Favorite Mistake” became one of the great classics in her repertoire: it reached number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Top 10. Over time, Crow herself has also indicated that it remains one of her favorite songs and that she especially enjoys performing it live, a good indication of its importance within her career.
