If you’ve ever spotted someone strolling under the scorching sun in a black velvet coat and thought, "That is commitment," welcome to the gothic world. But heads up—it’s not all doom and gloom; goth culture is, above all, a celebration of individuality, Romantic literature, and, of course, a skin-crawlingly good soundtrack.

The Sound from the Crypt

It all started in the late '70s. While punk was screaming with rage, Post-Punk decided to dim the lights and get reflective. Bands like Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The Cure created a dense sound, featuring basslines that rumble in your chest and lyrics that feel like they were ripped from a Lord Byron poem.

Over time, the family grew and got even more interesting. Today, we have a musical menu for every palate:

• Darkwave: For those who love synthesizers and dreamlike atmospheres.
• Deathrock: The more rebellious, fast-paced, and visually "punk" side of the spectrum.
• Ethereal Wave: Celestial vocals that make you feel like you’re floating in an abandoned cathedral.

More Than Just a Black Outfit

Being goth isn’t just about "dressing for a funeral." It’s about finding beauty in the tragic, the ancient, and what society often labels as "weird." It is an incredibly kind community that values art, history, and, interestingly enough, possesses a very sharp (and dark) sense of humor.

Special Note: The Day of Darkness

Hey! Did you know goths have their own official day? That’s right: May 22nd is World Goth Day.

It all started in the UK back in 2009. As it turns out, BBC Radio 6 aired a program about subcultures, and DJs Cruel Britannia and Martin Oldgoth felt it didn't go far enough. They decided a brief moment on air wasn't enough for such elegance, so they invented this global date!

It’s the perfect excuse to dust off your finest gear and remember that the darkness has its own glow.
