Pride Month is here and with it comes the glitter, dancefloors, and iconic songs that have shaped LGBTQIA+ culture for generations. From disco-era liberation to modern queer pop, Pride anthems have always been more than just hits: they’re songs of freedom, resilience, celebration, and unapologetic self-expression 🏳️‍🌈

What makes a Pride anthem? Sometimes it’s an openly queer artist. Sometimes it’s a song about freedom, survival, heartbreak, or self-expression that the LGBTQIA+ community embraced and transformed into something bigger. One thing never changes: Pride anthems bring people together.

For over 50 years, these tracks have united clubs, marches, karaoke nights, and Pride parades around the world. Some were written as empowerment anthems, while others became accidental queer classics embraced by the community forever.

Here’s a journey through 10 of the most iconic Pride anthems through the decades, plus a a modern bonus track keeping the spirit alive for a new generation.

1970s: Disco Changed Everything 🪩

Born in the 1970s, disco culture thrived in LGBTQIA+ clubs. In these spaces, music, style, and liberation merged, transforming dancefloors into vibrant havens of pure celebration and escape.

Gloria Gaynor – “I Will Survive” (1978)
Possibly the ultimate Pride anthem of all time. What started as a breakup song became a universal message of resilience and empowerment for queer communities everywhere.

Sylvester – “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” (1978)
Disco, glamour, and unapologetic queer joy. Sylvester helped define the sound and spirit of Pride celebrations.

1980s: Pop Icons & Identity 🌈

In the 80s, pop music got bigger and fashion became wild and colourful. For the LGBTQIA+ community, it was a big step forward. Artists broke traditional gender rules on stage, helping people feel proud and bringing LGBTQIA+ culture into the spotlight.

Diana Ross – “I’m Coming Out” (1980)
One of the most recognizable coming-out anthems ever recorded.

Bronski Beat – “Smalltown Boy” (1984)
One of the first mainstream pop songs to openly tell a gay story. Its emotional lyrics about rejection and escape still hit hard today.

1990s: Club Culture Takes Over 👰🏼‍♀️

By the 90s, dance music and queer nightlife were deeply connected. Pride anthems became louder, bolder, and more euphoric.

Madonna – “Vogue” (1990)
Inspired by ballroom culture, “Vogue” brought underground queer culture into the mainstream.

Cher – “Believe” (1998)
A dancefloor classic that became one of the biggest queer club anthems of all time.

2000s: The Era of Pop Divas 💃

The 2000s saw Pride playlists dominated by huge pop choruses, emotional empowerment, and dance tracks built for massive crowds.

Kylie Minogue – “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” (2001)
Minimal, hypnotic, and essential on every Pride playlist.

Lady Gaga – “Born This Way” (2011)
Technically just outside the 2000s, but impossible to ignore. Gaga created an instant LGBTQIA+ empowerment anthem celebrating identity without apology.

2010s: Queer Artists Take Centre Stage 🏳️‍🌈
For the first time, openly LGBTQIA+ artists weren’t just influencing pop culture, they were leading it.

9. Robyn – “Dancing On My Own” (2010)
Heartbreak turned into dancefloor therapy. Emotional, dramatic, and timeless.

10. Lil Nas X – “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” (2021)
Bold, provocative, and impossible to ignore, Lil Nas X pushed queer visibility in mainstream pop to new heights. The song sparked conversations about queer identity, masculinity, and representation in modern music.

Bonus track 🥁

"Pink Pony Club" – Chappell Roan (2023/2024)
It is the definitive Pride anthem of the decade. It perfectly captures the classic LGBTQIA+ journey of leaving a hometown behind to find freedom and a "chosen family" in a queer nightclub.

From disco classics to modern queer pop, Pride anthems have continued to evolve while celebrating the same message: freedom, identity, and self-expression.
