Song became the duo's breakout hit, peaking at number eight on the United States Billboard Hot 100 .

"Safe and Sound" is a synth-pop, new wave, dance-pop, and alternative rock song. It features a prominent trumpet line, which was only incorporated into its production after eight previous takes of the song.

The original video features archival footage of people dancing through various years with brief war footage.

The official video features the band performing the song in the Los Angeles Theatre with dancers from various decades that emerge from pictures on the wall and film clips .
