One-Hit Wonder Song

"Kung Fu Fighting" -  Carl Douglas

"Kung Fu Fighting" is a 1974 disco smash hit by Jamaican-British singer Carl Douglas, produced by Biddu. Written in just 10 minutes, the song capitalized on the 1970s kung fu film craze, topping charts worldwide (UK, US, Canada, Australia) and selling over 11 million records.

Released in August 1974, it was an unexpected hit that became one of the best-selling singles of all time, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1974.

Carl Douglas wrote the song after watching kids shadow-boxing to music in a video arcade.

It was initially intended to be a B-side for another song, "I Want to Give You My Everything", but producers realized it was stronger and shifted it to the A-side.

The song features a distinct "Oriental riff" (a musical phrase signifying Chinese culture) combined with a disco beat.

The song is considered a classic "one-hit wonder" of the 70s that perfectly captured the zeitgeist of the era

What is a One-Hit Wonder?

A one-hit wonder is a musical artist or band that achieves significant, mainstream popularity with a single hit song but fails to replicate that success with subsequent work. While sometimes having other minor hits, they are primarily remembered by the general public for one defining, often highly memorable, popular song.
