With Joker: Folie à Deux, the DC film “Joker” from 2019 gets a sequel.
The new film stars Joaquin Phoenix once again in his Oscar-winning dual role as Arthur Fleck/Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.

Joker: Folie À Deux takes place two years after the events of Joker (2019).

Arthur Fleck, now institutionalised at Arkham Asylum awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker, falls in love with fellow inmate Lee Quinzel/ Harley Quinn. As the two experience life as a musical through their linked insanity, Arthur's followers start a movement to liberate him.

The film’s title is taken from the French idiom meaning 'madness of two' which refers to a delusional disorder shared by two people in close association. Much like the Joker and Harley Quinn.

It’s a movie where music is an essential element, and Lady Gaga says that "the music is used to really give the characters a way to express what they need to say because the scene and dialogue is just not enough".

Gaga recently released a Joker: Folie à Deux companion album inspired by her character and titled “Harlequin”. She is the second actress to portray a live-action Harley Quinn on the big screen, following Margot Robbie.

Described by Gaga as "vintage pop", Harlequin consists of songs featured on the film's soundtrack, as well as two original songs with different production. It expands on Gaga's venture into jazz music, also including elements of rock, soul, gospel and doo-wop in its composition.

SHOCK FOR LADY GAGA
Fans are furious about Joker, raining terrible ratings, he is threatened with disaster in cinemas: 'This is a shame'

Audiences gave the film a D rating, the worst ever for a superhero movie, and even though it costs twice as much as the unit, it will earn twice as much
A survey of the cinema audience, conducted by the American company CinemaScore, showed that viewers gave Todd Phillips' new film "Joker: Folie à Deux" a very poor rating. The continuation of the movie "Joker" (2019), which brought the actor Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar in the category of the best leading actor, is clearly not in favor of the cinema audience. The movie "Joker: Madness for Two" became, in fact, the first Hollywood film based on a comic that the audience, on a scale of "A" to "F", rated a low "D" (for comparison, the original "Joker" earned grade B+), writes The Hollywood Reporter.

"Joker: Madness in Two" had no better luck even in the PostTrak poll, in which the audience gave it half a star out of five.

The audience's dissatisfaction is also reflected in cinema attendance, which is trotting well behind expectations. The film, which cost more than $190 million to produce, earned just $20 million on Friday.

While the film "Deadpool and Wolverine" earned 1.3 billion dollars worldwide, surpassing the original "Joker" (1.1 billion dollars) and becoming the most popular film with the R mark (restricted - a film under 17 years of age, which includes content intended for adults , should be watched with an adult) in history, the stars are not smiling on the new "Joker" (which is also rated R).

The reason for the failure of the new "Joker" is, writes Deadline, as clear as day. "No fan of the original movie wanted to see the musical sequel, Mr. Phillips. Period," they are convinced. It was also a mistake to premiere the film as part of the Venice Film Festival, according to other opinions.

"For a film that lasts two hours and fifteen minutes, "Madness in Two" seems narratively a bit thin, and at times even boring," wrote The Hollywood Reporter's film critic David Rooney from Venice.

Unlike the "polarizing" sequel, which earned mixed reviews, "Joker" from 2019, whose production cost only fifty million dollars, debuted very successfully, earning $96.2 million at the time.

It is also interesting that even those superhero films that fail at the box office still earn decent ratings in the CinemaScores survey. An example of this phenomenon is the movie "The Marvels", which received a B rating.
