With Joker: Folie à Deux, the DC film “Joker” from 2019 gets a sequel.
The new film stars Joaquin Phoenix once again in his Oscar-winning dual role as Arthur Fleck/Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
Joker: Folie À Deux takes place two years after the events of Joker (2019).
Arthur Fleck, now institutionalised at Arkham Asylum awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker, falls in love with fellow inmate Lee Quinzel/ Harley Quinn. As the two experience life as a musical through their linked insanity, Arthur's followers start a movement to liberate him.
The film’s title is taken from the French idiom meaning 'madness of two' which refers to a delusional disorder shared by two people in close association. Much like the Joker and Harley Quinn.
It’s a movie where music is an essential element, and Lady Gaga says that "the music is used to really give the characters a way to express what they need to say because the scene and dialogue is just not enough".
Gaga recently released a Joker: Folie à Deux companion album inspired by her character and titled “Harlequin”. She is the second actress to portray a live-action Harley Quinn on the big screen, following Margot Robbie.
Described by Gaga as "vintage pop", Harlequin consists of songs featured on the film's soundtrack, as well as two original songs with different production. It expands on Gaga's venture into jazz music, also including elements of rock, soul, gospel and doo-wop in its composition.
