Tony Bennett (August 3, 1926 – July 21, 2023)

Tony Bennett (born Anthony Dominick Benedetto) was an American jazz and traditional pop singer. Known as one of the greatest interpreters of the American Songbook, his career spanned more than seven decades. He won 20 Grammy Awards, two Emmy Awards, and sold more than 50 million records worldwide.

Born in Astoria, New York, the son of Italian immigrants, Bennett showed an early passion for singing and painting. He served as an infantryman in Europe during World War II.

After the war, he began singing, and in 1950, he signed a contract with Columbia Records. His first major hit was "Because of You" (1951).

He was distinguished by his warm, velvety voice and an exceptional ability to convey the emotions of composers.

Although he had numerous hits, such as "Cold, Cold Heart" and "Rags to Riches", Bennett is best known for his evergreen song "I Left My Heart in San Francisco", recorded in 1962. This song brought him worldwide fame and became his trademark.

In his later years, he achieved notable and very successful collaborations with modern musicians, the most famous of which is with Lady Gaga (collaboration on the albums Cheek to Cheek and Love For Sale).
