But before he checks in, he runs into a bunch of long-haired hippies led by George Berger, an easygoing dude who lives day-to-day.

Picture the scene: on one side, you have the disciplined kid who just wants to do his patriotic duty, and on the other, a crew that lives to party, promotes free love, pulls crazy stunts right in the middle of Central Park, and flips off the establishment. Berger and his gang take Claude under their wing to show him what true freedom is before his life changes completely.

Vietnam and the Lump in Your Throat

Even though the movie is packed with dancing, colors, and good vibes, the background story hits you right in the chest. The Vietnam War was the ultimate nightmare for young people back then; nobody wanted to go risk their neck in a distant country for politicians' whims.

Forman manages to capture that rebellious feeling without getting boring or turning into a history lecture. He shows how the youth preferred to raise hell, protest in crowds, and sing for peace rather than carry rifles around.
