The Hannibal (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the musical score for Ridley Scott's 2001 psychological thriller Hannibal, composed and arranged by Hans Zimmer.

Unlike typical thriller scores, Zimmer leaned heavily into high-classical and operatic styling to mirror Dr. Hannibal Lecter's refined, high-culture tastes.
A standout, acclaimed choral/operatic piece composed by Patrick Cassidy based on Dante’s La Vita Nuova, performed during a pivotal scene in Florence.
Sir Anthony Hopkins contributes spoken excerpts and dramatic readings as Lecter.

Highlight Tracks

"Vide Cor Meum" (Patrick Cassidy / Hans Zimmer): An operatic centerpiece featuring a libretto based on Dante Alighieri’s La Vita Nuova, performed by Danielle de Niese and Bruno Lazzaretti (with Anthony Hopkins credited on certain releases). It is the most streamed and iconic track from the album.

"Dear Clarice" (Hans Zimmer): The primary theme for the film, introducing both the haunting string-driven relationship motif for Clarice and Lecter and a playful/dark piano counterpoint featuring a boy soprano.

"Let My Home Be My Gallows" (Hans Zimmer): A sweeping, epic dramatic cue that acts as one of the album's largest centerpieces.

"Gourmet Valse Tartare" (Klaus Badelt): A stylish, upscale orchestral waltz that fits the sophisticated European setting of the film.

"To Every Captive Soul" (Hans Zimmer): The closing track of the album, praised for leaning heavily into a tragic, romantic orchestral style.

"Goldberg Variations (BWV Aria)" (J.S. Bach / Glenn Gould): A classical touchstone featured prominently in the film's atmosphere.

“Hannibal” is a 2001 American thriller film co-produced and directed by Ridley Scott from a screenplay by David Mamet and Steven Zaillian, based on the 1999 novel by Thomas Harris.

Vide Cor Meum is the one that stays with me from this score — that operatic lift feels so different from a typical thriller soundtrack, and it fits the Florence scenes beautifully. Dear Clarice is a close second for me, as the strings give it such a haunting, elegant edge.
