Like a Stone" is a 2003 hit by rock supergroup Audioslave, known for its emotional, slow-burn sound, contrasting with the band’s typical heavy style. It features melodic vocals from Chris Cornell and a distinct, "lo-fi" guitar solo from Tom Morello. Lyrically, it centers on themes of mortality, waiting for the afterlife, and loneliness, rather than traditional romance.

While bassist Tim Commerford initially suggested it was about an old man waiting for death, songwriter Chris Cornell explained it as a meditation on the afterlife. He described it as focusing on the afterlife you hope for, trying to be a good person, and hoping to find peace, rather than focusing solely on traditional religious views of heaven and hell.

The song explores themes of regret, longing, and existential contemplation. The lyrics describe a lonely, quiet wait ("I'll wait for you there like a stone").

It was one of the first songs written by the band (comprised of Cornell and three members of Rage Against the Machine),and It was the band's highest-charting single from their 2002 self-titled debut album, reaching number one on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks and Modern Rock Tracks charts.

Music Video: Directed by Meiert Avis, the video features the band performing in an old house, using the concept of negative space to evoke memories.

Despite speculation, Cornell stated the song was not written about the death of Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley, as it was written before that time.

"Like A Stone"

On a cobweb afternoon in a room full of emptiness
By a freeway, I confess I was lost in the pages
Of a book full of death, reading how we'll die alone
And if we're good, we'll lay to rest anywhere we want to go

In your house I long to be
Room by room patiently
I'll wait for you there like a stone
I'll wait for you there alone

And on my deathbed I will pray to the gods and the angels
Like a pagan to anyone who will take me to heaven
To a place I recall, I was there so long ago
The sky was bruised, the wine was bled, and there you led me on

In your house I long to be
Room by room, patiently
I'll wait for you there like a stone
I'll wait for you there alone, alone

And on I read until the day was gone
And I sat in regret of all the things I've done
For all that I've blessed, and all that I've wronged
In dreams until my death I will wander on

In your house I long to be
Room by room, patiently
I'll wait for you there like a stone
I'll wait for you there alone, alone

The song instantly shifts my mood, making me reflect on time, a long past, and a short future. It is a complete catharsis

(It saves me a therapy appointment with the psychologist)
