"I Shot the Sheriff" is a iconic 1973 reggae song written by Bob Marley and released on The Wailers' album Burnin'. While it became a global hit through Eric Clapton's 1974 cover, the original song is a deeply political, symbolic narrative about standing up to oppression and injustice.

Marley explained that he wanted to call the song "I Shot the Police," but feared a major "fuss" from the government, so he replaced "police" with "sheriff." He stated that both words represent the same concept of protesting against injustice.

The song reflects Marley’s feeling of being persecuted by authority figures, often interpreted as a protest against the systemic oppression of black people and Rastafarians.

In 2012, former girlfriend Esther Anderson claimed the song was a metaphor for Marley's opposition to her use of birth control pills, with "Sheriff John Brown" acting as the doctor prescribing them.

In 1974, Eric Clapton covered the song on his album 461 Ocean Boulevard. It became his only #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Despite the commercial success of the cover, Marley noted that he felt his original version was more potent, though he liked Clapton's version.

The song was seen as a bold, revolutionary anthem, contrasting with the more conventional music of the time. It was later used to highlight hypocrisy during the controversy surrounding Ice-T's "Cop Killer" song.

The lyrics tell the story of a narrator who shoots a corrupt local sheriff who was trying to kill him, but he denies killing the deputy ("I shot the sheriff, but I didn't shoot no deputy").

The line "Every time I plant a seed / He said, 'Kill it before it grow'" is interpreted as a metaphor for authorities preventing growth, progress, or Rastafarian practices.

"I Shot The Sheriff"

I shot the sheriff
But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no, oh
I shot the sheriff
But I didn't shoot no deputy, ooh, ooh, ooh

Yeah, all around in my home town
They're trying to track me down, yeah
They say they want to bring me in guilty
For the killing of a deputy
For the life of a deputy
But I say
Oh, now, now, oh

I shot the sheriff, the sheriff
But I swear it was in self-defense, oh no
Ooh, ooh, ooh, yeah
I say, I shot the sheriff, oh Lord
And they say it is a capital offense, yeah
Ooh, ooh, ooh, yeah

Sheriff John Brown always hated me
For what, I don't know
Every time I plant a seed
He said kill it before it grow
He said kill them before they grow
And so, and so
Read it in the news

I shot the sheriff, oh Lord
But I swear it was in self-defense
Where was the deputy? Ooh, ooh, ooh
I say, I shot the sheriff
But I swear it was in self-defense, yeah
Ooh-ooh

Freedom came my way one day
And I started out of town, yeah
All of a sudden I saw Sheriff John Brown
Aiming to shoot me down
So I shot, I shot, I shot him down and I say
If I am guilty I will pay (pay, pay, pay, pay, pay)

I shot the sheriff
But I say, but I didn't shoot no deputy
I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no, ooh, ooh, ooh
I shot the sheriff, I did
But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh
Ooh, ooh, ooh

Reflexes had the better of me
And what is to be must be
Every day the bucket a-go a well
One day the bottom a-go drop out
One day the bottom a-go drop out

I say
I-I-I, I shot the sheriff
Lord, I didn't shot the deputy, no
Yeah, I-I shot the sheriff
But I didn't shoot no deputy, yeah, so, yeah
