"Barracuda" is a 1977 hard-rock classic by the band Heart, driven by Ann and Nancy Wilson's fury at their record label. It was penned as a blistering feminist anthem against the 1970s music industry's rampant sexism and voyeurism, specifically targeting a promoter who fabricated sleazy rumors about the sisters.

After Heart released their early material, their record label (Mushroom Records) attempted to drum up publicity by taking advantage of 1970s rock 'n' roll misogyny. The label ran a lewd advertising campaign implying the sisters were romantically involved in an incestuous relationship. Later, after a show, a sleazy male promoter brazenly approached lead singer Ann Wilson, making vulgar comments about her "lover" (referring to her sister, Nancy). Furious, Ann went back to her hotel room and channeled her pure anger into the blistering lyrics of "Barracuda".

The galloping, chugging guitar rhythm was heavily inspired by the sound of Led Zeppelin's "Achilles Last Stand".

The song primarily utilizes a 4/4 time signature but occasionally throws in an unexpected measure of five beats, giving the song a lurking, unsettling edge.

The band struggled to find a way to end the driving track, eventually deciding to snap it off abruptly. They manipulated the volume faders to build tension before cutting the sound entirely, much like the slamming of a door.

Legacy and Uses"Barracuda" remains one of the most iconic and recognizable tracks in rock history, reaching \(11\) on the Billboard Hot 100. It has taken on fresh significance in the modern era as an anthem for the #MeToo movement and women standing up against corporate or industry exploitation.

"Barracuda"

So this ain't the end, I saw you again, today
I had to turn my heart away
Smile like the sun, kisses for everyone
And tales, it never fails

You lying so low in the weeds
I bet you gonna ambush me
You'd have me down, down, down, down on my knees
Now wouldn't you, Barracuda? Oh

Back over time we were all trying for free
You met the porpoise and me
No right, no wrong you're selling a song, a name
Whisper game

And if the real thing don't do the trick
You better make up something quick
You gonna burn, burn, burn, burn, burn to the wick
Oooo, Barracuda, oh yeah

"Sell me, sell you" the porpoise said
Dive down deep to save my head
You, I think you got the blues too

All that night and all the next
Swam without looking back
Made for the western pools, silly, silly fools

If the real thing don't do the trick, no
You better make up something quick
You gonna burn, burn, burn, burn, burn it to the wick
Oooo, Barra-Barracuda
Yeah
Ohhhhhh yea
