Kid Creole And The Coconuts

"Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy" is a 1982 hit single by the American band Kid Creole and the Coconuts, written and produced by frontman August Darnell.

Musical Style: It blends Latin rhythms, calypso, big band swing, funk, and pop.

Theme and Lyrics

Plot: The song uses a lively, danceable rhythm to tell a satirical and dark story about a man who denies paternity to a child (or his wife).
Key Lyrics: The narrator’s primary justification is that the child is supposedly "not beautiful enough" to be his own ("if it was in your blood, then you wouldn't be so ugly!").
Backing Vocals: The female vocal trio, The Coconuts, respond to the narrator with memorable lines such as "Break it to me gently" and "Mama's baby's Papa's maybe."

This is such a fun throwback. The mix of Latin rhythms and big band swing makes it impossible not to move along to, even though the story itself is pretty cheeky. The Coconuts really steal it for me with those backing vocals.
