In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon

2023

On January 15, 2019, Paul Simon had a dream in which a voice told him, “You are working on the Seven Psalms.” In the months that followed, lyrics and phrases would come to him at odd times, sometimes even while he was sleeping. He began to hear a melody that would connect the fragments. The process continued throughout the pandemic.

As the lyrics took shape—like photographs emerging from a chemical bath in a darkroom—Paul Simon reached out to director Alex Gibney to see if he would be interested in filming his process of turning the basic elements into the album that would become Seven Psalms. While the small crew assembled, Gibney and producer Svetlana Zill traveled to Simon's new studio in Wimberly, Texas, where Simon, using guitar and raw vocals, sketched out a series of songs that explored faith, death, the existence of God (and the mystery of creation).

Becoming Madonna

2024

Through exclusive interviews, unreleased songs and rare, never-before-seen footage, this comprehensive documentary, composed largely of archival material, tells the story of how Madonna became the most powerful woman in pop music.
From the loss of her mother, a devout Catholic and a staunch believer, who died of cancer when Madonna was five, to her arrival in New York in 1978 as a poor nineteen-year-old dancer from Michigan... Madonna always knew she was destined for great things, but not exactly what. The film shows how in the 1980s, in Reagan's America, when misogyny reigned in the music industry, the Midwestern teenager became an ardent supporter of the sexual liberation of young women and the emancipation of the LGBT community. We also learn how, after the deaths of close friends from AIDS, she decided to fight for creative freedom, no matter the cost.
