Does it support AirPlay 2?

Hello,

I’m part of iOS beta and I would like to know whether the app was updated to support QirPlay 2 features?
When I connect to my AirPlay 2 speaker (only have one so far but updates are coming for the others) I don’t feel any benefits. My understanding was that AirPaly 2 would support long form audio meaning that the song will be loaded in a queue within the speaker’s memory instead of short streaming from the phone.

Can you confirm if it supports AirPlay 2 new features? If not when will it be added?

best

Hi @jeremybonan thanks for following up on this.

I checked the initial thread internally, but still no plans for now.

But things might change in a couple of months.

Adding pressure on this, I am currently europeanizing all my digital services and switched to Deezer, I was kind of shocked this 5 year old protocol, that doesn't require licensing, hasn't been updated? You either use Bluetooth when you’re on the move, or, when at home, you obviously use AirPlay 2. Please schedule this immediately. Can’t consider to fully switch with my home wifi from Apple Music unless this comes 😟

If and when Deezer implements Airplay 2, will there as well be a means by which CD quality streams cans still exist? CD quality is one of the advertised strengths of the Deezer platform, this will be lost in Airplay 2 which currently does not support lossless audio streams.

It would be great if Deezer could clarify the current situation on AirPlay 2 perspective and pros and cons if they exist.

Hi @jeremybonan @BigFKahuna @plhrmnn @archaic_email I have been asking around about AirPlay 2 and this information was shared with me:

Deezer supports Airplay 1 and 2.

    1. Accessibility of the feature
AirPlay is available in the app: Full Player > Bottom right button "Audio Output" > AirPlay.

    2. AirPlay 2 Features
    AirPlay 2 mainly introduces:

    • Multiroom (streaming to multiple devices simultaneously)
    • An improved buffer (reducing the need to keep the device constantly near the speaker)

Currently, in our app, we support:

    • :white_tick: Multiroom
    • If multiple AirPlay devices are available, users can select more than one.
    • :x: Improved buffer
    • We do not take advantage of this feature for technical reasons like losing some existing features (Gapless & Tuner)

    3. AirPlay Audio Quality
Apple has not been obvious on this, but from what we could gather:
AirPlay is limited to CD quality (16-bit/44.1 kHz).
This is an Apple-imposed limitation, and there’s nothing we can do about it.
This applies to both AirPlay 1 and AirPlay 2.

    4. What's next
In the near future, there are no plans to take advantage of AirPlay's advanced buffering.
However, we already fully support AirPlay and its multiroom feature.

@José.Deezer thanks for this! I do understand that Airplay 2 can support CD quality, however I’ll bet that in fact it does not when streaming from an Airplay 2 device to an Airplay 2 endpoint. This would result in, at best...if not worse than, Bluetooth quality streams. My main attraction to Deezer was Deezer’s claim to lossless, CD quality streams, which currently does NOT generally happen. What we really need is a Deezer Connect, similar to Tidal or Spotify, supported by industry players in the field of active, powered speakers such as the quantity driven Sonos or quality driven KEF systems. (For example).

    Thanks for clarifying this clearly.

Sad about no improved buffering in the future. But good to see Deezer being this transparent.
