I switched to Apple music

Here’s the deal. I’ve used Deezer for years and was 99% satisfied. However, one specific issue drove me crazy and eventually became the dealbreaker that made me leave.

I don’t know about you, but in 90% of cases, I listen to Deezer in my car while driving. My car has a Bluetooth player that is supposed to start playing music automatically when I start the engine. The problem is that this is impossible—at least on the iPhone/iOS system I use. Due to some stupid restrictions Apple has put in place, even when a shortcut/automation is set to run without confirmation, it won't trigger until I manually unlock the phone. This completely defeats the purpose of 'automation' if the action isn't actually automatic.

This has put me in dangerous situations many times. Because of some made-up concern over 'potential misuse,' Apple has forced me into scenarios where I’ve almost caused a traffic accident. I’ll start driving, forget to launch Deezer, and then find myself reaching for my phone, unlocking it, launching the app, and searching for 'Shuffle my music' while on the move. By the time I’ve done all that, I’ve often ended up in very risky situations in traffic.

Because of this, I decided to switch to Apple Music. And wouldn't you know it—Apple Music works automatically without needing to unlock the phone. It’s incredibly irresponsible of Apple to gatekeep like this.

I’m sorry to leave Deezer, but I also blame Deezer for not resolving this. I wrote on this very forum years ago pointing out this problem. I received generic responses saying that the 'relevant department' would look into it, but nothing was ever fixed. At first, there were even two official Deezer shortcuts in the gallery called 'Shuffle my music' and 'Play my Flow.' Instead of insisting on them and 'pestering' Apple to allow their use without manual unlocking, Deezer simply pulled them from the gallery.

In the few days I've been using Apple Music, I haven't seen a single thing that makes it better than Deezer—in fact, I think some things are better handled on Deezer. However, until this automation issue is resolved, I won't be coming back. It might seem like a small thing to some, but for me, it creates massive problems.

A familiar problem. I use Deezer on iOS as well, and what I’m running into is very similar to what you’re experiencing.

After a drive with Deezer running, I’m usually at work for about three hours. And when I head off again to the next store after those three hours, Deezer almost never starts playing on its own. I have to restart the album, playlist or Flow manually. With a playlist in particular, that becomes quite annoying.

What bothers me even more is that if I receive a phone call while driving, Deezer sometimes doesn’t resume afterwards.

I then have to restart the album, playlist or Flow again. And although I can control Deezer through CarPlay, it’s obviously not safe to scroll through the entire menu while driving just to get back to the right place.

And using Siri? Well, I never get what I ask for.

I also tried Apple Music for a month to see whether I’d run into the same issues, but no. Apple simply continues where you left off, and after a phone call it resumes without any fuss.

I do understand that Apple can get things working smoothly between iOS, CarPlay and Apple Music, and that Deezer is dependent on Apple’s system. But it doesn’t make it any less frustrating.

And I’m on the road 4 or 5 hours a day, so I use Deezer mainly in my car.

I prefer Deezer above Apple Music, ‘cause I find Deezer easier to use and many other things, but it is sometimes frustrating.
