Concept

The ability for users to create playlists based on track metadata like genre(s), release date, artist location, artist name, song length, etc.

Value

I would love to be able to sort through my “Collection” of albums that I’ve collected and build playlists based on metadata, such that I don’t have to manually update a playlist, I can just “collect” an album or song and it will show up on that playlist automatically if it meets the criteria. It would provide so much versatility and utility for users/listeners.

Concerns

This may necessitate other changes to how Deezer’s library/player currently operates:

  1. I’d hate to conflate the functionality of marking a album/track a “favorite” because, this is more of a universal status, in my opinion. My “favorites” should be across all playlists/genres/etc. Therefore, Deezer may need to add a new way to “collect” albums/tracks into a “Collection” so that the smart playlist feature can draw from the data set.
  2. This may necessitate the development of background tasks in order to update the lists somewhat routinely or on demand. This could have an impact on infrastructure and performance; although, I believe it could be done quite easily on the client-side.
  3. Publishers/Labels/Artists tend to be a little bit lazy when it comes to adding metadata to the tracks/albums so this may necessitate the need for custom metadata; e.g. adding the genre, “djent,” to a band’s track’s even though some would disagree.
