Detect duplicate tracks by name (or other means) in playlists and bulk remove

I’ve been attacked by Kyu Sakamoto today again and again. Turns out, there’s *a lot* of duplicates:

I frankly wonder whether Deezer’s claim of so many millions of songs isn’t just false advertising falling under unfair competition laws.

Just used Tune My Music to merge all the services I’ve used in the past, and now have to clean a sh*tload of duplicates, slightly different versions, and “unavailable in your country” songs in my Favorites, would be awesome to have a feature to at least speed up some parts of this process

I switched to Deezer from Spotify after 6 years of using the latter. I don’t understand why there’s absolutely no protection against adding duplicates or any utilities or built-in features for automatically detecting and removing them. When I add a song to my “Favorites” playlist (by pressing the heart), a track that is literally the same—same title, same mastering—but for example was released first as a single and then later included in an album, appears on the platform as two identical tracks, sometimes even more than two. And there’s no safeguard when adding them.

So when you add a new album by an artist to your favorites, all the tracks that were previously released as singles get duplicated in the playlist, but now they just have the album cover :D

I’m also very curious why the last message in this thread is 4 years old, even though this seems like a fairly common issue. Manually deleting songs and searching for duplicates in huge playlists is very inconvenient.

I’d appreciate it if someone could explain why this keeps getting postponed.

For the 14 years I’ve been using Deezer (almost to the day!), this has been a thorn in my side. I always avoided Spotify, so I don’t know how well their duplicate detection is, but the not-the-Google-of-Music-Streaming-ness of Deezer keeps me here.

I’ve been planning on writing an API script to do this for ages, but I’ve always concentrated my efforts on more quality-of-life things, like playlist management.

However, I have decided recently that I might be starting to work on a comprehensive Deezer playlist manager (including duplicate detection). The catch is that in order to use it (which is already an “if”), you need access to the API which Deezer has closed to any ol’ person this year. I needed to contact them to “extend” my usage of it.

All that being said, I’ll update here if I make any significant progress. It’ll likely be a mess since I’m not trying to do it professionally or anything. It’s for me (and maybe, for you, too).

Hi. I’m really glad you replied. I hope they give you the go-ahead and share the API so you can create the script. 

As for Spotify, there’s no protection against duplicates there either, or if there is, it doesn’t work very well – I can’t quite remember now – but simply because they have an open API, there are loads of services that let you tweak playlists. Including ones that search for and remove duplicates. 

So good luck, and I’d be grateful for any updates :)
