What does FLOW think if I unlike a song?

Userlevel 1

Hello. I am in love with my FLOW, it works amazing, but I have a question about the algorithm behind it. Let’s say FLOW played a song I haven’t heard before and I added it to my liked songs by tapping the heart. I try to only add album versions of a song for organization purposes and I didn’t realise the song was from a single. What happens if I remove the heart while the song is still playing and add the album version instead? Does FLOW think I dislike that song?

That’s a good question .

My assumption is Deezer acts to both songs separately  though I’m not really sure how the algorithm take it ….

@cefeb

In my opinion it’s like @Noam Asulin said. Deezer will remember that you may in general like this artist and the genre, but specially the liked song. Flow also prefers to play songs from your liked list, but may be in future it also will play other versions of the song.
Only disliked songs or artists will be ignored by flow.

@cefeb

Flow is already smart enough to realize that only a different variant of the song is favored. Dislikes have a much stronger effect.
Otherwise, don't think too much about it and rather listen to more music.

Alternatively, I recommend reading this really excellent article:

Thank you so much!

One more thing (6 Nov 23) - I see that to ‘tame’ flow, it needs to learn - got that.

So reading up on the Deezer forum, I can ‘heart’ something I like (already figured that out), or ‘not recommend’  which requires me to click on the 3 dots and then scroll to that option.

BUT!  If you are in play ‘favourites’, the ‘do not recommend’ isn’t there - even though the tracks are most certainly NOT favourites.  You can only either ‘heart’ them or skip.
(And as an aside, I saw one explanation for disliking a track where there’s an angry face to click on - I presume that's disappeared?  It’s not on my desktop app nor my phone app.

You are correct. There is no angry face button to click on when listening to your “Favorites”.

But there is a difference between the 2 favorites:

  • You can listen to your “favorites”. Music that can be from your favorites or music that is similaire to your music taste. This is all put in 1 mix. Only option: Heart or skip.
  • You can listen to your (real) favorites. You have to go to your playlists and choose Favorite songs.

Shuffle my music
(Shuffle mijn muziek)
This is the first option, with your favorites mixed with others.

Your real favorites.

On the web:

By using this, you will get a mix from your favorites and other simulair songs, Heart or skip.

By using this, you will get only your favorites.

I have found out how to get rid of the tracks that I don’t like - on the desktop version anyway!

Rather than just skip it (for it to probably come up again) there’s an X at the end of the track details.
Hopefully the tracks don’t come back!

Let’s hope so. Let us know if this is not the case.

My desktop app was updated today - now the ‘favourites’ have a ‘do not recommend this track’ plus the X to get rid of it altogether.

The only thing now is I have to be vigilant as no matter how many times I do not recommend and delete the damn Christmas tracks, new ones keep coming - Deezer is simply not learning that this genre is NOT my thing!

So, Deezer really isn’t actually learning AFAIK - This is the 3rd track I have gone to ‘not recommend’ and it’s already done by me before (I know because it now wants to know if I recommend it now.) So, not recommending and deleting does not work.

Come on Deezer - LEARN!!

What do I do now? Report a problem?

About to give up on the whole thing - the point of getting Deezer was to build playlists that I like.  But it’s simply not learning and still putting tracks in that I have already rejected. And when they come around again, there’s nothing to be done except skip it (on mobile app) plus, every 3rd or 4th track is a damn Christmas track - so I have to be constantly on the app to control the tracks instead of just enjoying it - I feel like I am holding back the tide of Christmas tracks (hate ‘em  - at ANY time!)
So, Deezer. you are on borrowed time!
