The “Princess of Pop” releases her 16th studio album Tension.
Earlier this year Kylie Minogue has teased her new album with the first single, ‘Padam Padam’, which features an earworm of a chorus over a huge electronic beat. Talking about her new album Kylie says:
“I started this album with an open mind and a blank page. Unlike my last two albums there wasn’t a ‘theme’, it was about finding the heart or the fun or the fantasy of that moment and always trying to service the song. I wanted to celebrate each song’s individuality and to dive into that freedom. I would say it’s a blend of personal reflection, club abandon and melancholic high.”
To celebrate the release of her new album and her music career of over 35 years, we have gathered a few interesting (and some random) facts about Kylie Minogue that you might have not known yet.
Kylie is the highest selling Australian-born solo artist of all time, she has sold over 80 million records worldwide.
She’d begun her showbiz career as an actress on the Aussie TV soap Neighbours. She actually returned to the TV Shows finale last year and played her role of Charlene Robinson one last time.
Her singing career kicked off on 11 July 1986 at a Fitzroy Football Club benefit concert with other Neighbours cast members. She performed ‘I Got You Babe’ with actor John Waters, and a version of sixties hit 'The Loco-Motion' as an encore. Mushroom Records signed her in 1987 before releasing her debut album, Kylie, in 1988.
‘Can’t Get You Out of My Head’ is her most successful single to date. It went to number 1 in over 40 countries and sold 5 million copies.
She's a big fan of collaboration. She's collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music industry. She has performed duets with Bono, Pet Shop Boys, Robbie Williams, Enrique Iglesias and Jason Donovan. Grand Theft Auto 5 even features ‘Kids’, her duet with Robbie Williams.
She's been a guest judge on multiple shows such as Project Runway All Stars and The X Factor UK, as well as appearing on The Voice UK, The Voice Australia, The X Factor Australia, The X Factor Ukraine and the US's Dancing with the Stars.
Her Glastonbury Legends performance in 2019 was the festival’s most watched to date. Kylie was heartbroken when she had to cancel her Glastonbury performance in 2005 due to her breast cancer diagnosis. 14 years later, she got to fulfil her dream and performed on the Pyramid stage of the iconic British music festival.
She has helped save countless lives through breast cancer awareness, receiving an honorary Doctorate of Health Science from Anglia Ruskin University for her work in awareness raising. At the time of her diagnosis mammograms performed in Australia increased by 40 per cent. They were calling it the “Kylie Effect”.
Madame Tussauds have four Kylie waxworks. Only Queen Elizabeth II has had more wax figures at Madame Tussauds in London.
She is great friends with the fashion designer Jean Paul Gautier. Kylie is known as a style icon but her looks are not without an entire team behind her. In the early days of her career, Jean Paul Gautier and Kylie worked together on many of her iconic looks and tour costumes.
