Greetings. I enjoy Deezer HiFi on my android phone very much, but even though my mobile data streaming is set to basic quality, and HQ is set to be used only via Chromecast Audio, everything is HQ no matter what the settings are. Can you please fix that. Even Songcatcher consumes way too much mobile data which is quite unnecessary.

Thank you

This hasn't been my experience. More details about the app version and download settings would be helpful. How do you define 'too much' data?

Hello @BodoRebić,

That’s strange indeed. How do you ascertain that the data consumption is coming from Deezer?

Like @Rick P. has mentioned, could you provide additional details such as Deezer type (Beta/Stable), version, Android Version?

To be sure that it’s Deezer using up your data, could you install an app like “GlassWire” and check what apps on your phone are using up your data?

If the app as well shows that it is indeed Deezer having issues, please write back here with screenshots too.

Otherwise if it’s some other app, manage it or uninstall that app and continue enjoying music on Deezer 😊

NB: You might want to also learn about how much data is needed to stream each quality too, see snippet below:

https://www.androidcentral.com/how-much-data-does-streaming-media-use

If the data consumption is within that range, then there are no issues at all - it’s normal. 😊

Hi guys, thank you for a quick reply. I am using the latest Android version on Xiaomi Redmi 8T mobile phone.

Here is a screenshot of data usage, it being streaming two songs and a Songcatcher once. Since then I disabled mobile data until the bug gets fixed. As I wrote in a previous message, streaming on mobile data is set to standard, WIFI and Chromecast to HQ.

There must be something wrong with your app settings - try deleting the app and reinstalling it. My usage this month is only a few MB, but I have been listening almost exclusively in offline mode since I've got about 100 GB of music already stored on my phone.

Ok, so I turned data usage on Deezer app temporarily and played 15 seconds of a song via mobile data.

Here are the screenshots:

  1. Data usage prior to using Deezer;
    1. streaming 15 seconds of a song:
      1. data usage after using Deezer on mobile data:
      2. Deezer settings screenshot:
everything is set to HQ except mobile data
      3. screenshot of my version of Deezer app:
      4. screenshot of my Deezer subscription plan:
      5. screenshot of my phone’s android version:

Hope this helps. If not I can set my system language to English later and do this all over with screenshots in English.

  1. Reinstalled the app
  2. turned off wifi
  3. played 2 sec of a song
    1. data usage after that:

Did you use mobile data to install the app? From what i remember the amount of data you've used isn't much more than the download file size and i wonder if the app download is included in the total. Also, looking at the screenshot you've included i think your playback settings are set to HiFi. If you set it lower then start to play a song I don't think the album art includes the HiFi logo.

Hi Rick. No, I did not download the app using mobile data. My streaming quality setting using mobile data is set to basic, and streaming on WiFi is set to HQ. However when streaming using mobile data playback is still HQ. In fact playback is always HQ no matter what. What I did not try yet is setting everything to basic quality and than trying to see if data consumption is lowered. I'll try that and see if it works

Curious. When you play something using data try selecting the Audio Output option under audio settings to confirm that the app is actually using the basic setting you've selected. Here's a grab of my screen for reference. In my case I'm currently using wifi so it's using the hifi setting.

Hi Rick thank you for your help! This is a very good idea. Hope it works!

Hey Guys,

Any news about High data usage? I have exactly same problems last days/1-2 week maybe . I have set up sound quality for data streaming to standard quality (5-6 hours of listening consumed about 200-300MB i guess and now 2-3h of listening consumes more than 500MB.

Any cgange of data usage when i change quality from standard to basic or whatever.

Still HIGH data usage compared to data usage “before”(1-2 week ago)

Any Ideas, news please?

Thanks

Hi @bizzysk! I have not yet tried setting different streaming quality on Wifi and Chromecast. I guess it affects playback quality over mobile data as well. Soon as I try different settings I will post my findings.

Ok, so I tried again, set my system language to English so that it is easier for everyone to understand what is going on with the data usage.

DATA USAGE PRIOR TO STARTING DEEZER APP
THESE ARE THE SETTINGS FOR THE STREAMING VIA MOBILE DATA

Started the app with these settings. Then started to play a song:

ALTHOUGH STREAMING QUALITY IS SET TO BASIC, THE SIGN HIFI IS VISIBLE IN LOWER LEFT CORNER

Data usage after playing several seconds of the song is as follows:

I hope these screenshots help to clarify the situation with data usage.

I believe that my mobile operator observed the same situation since it started including Deezer streaming via mobile data in my data plan, as it was not the case in previous months. This practice started ever since HiFi streaming quality was introduced into family subscription on Deezer.

Hope this helps and I hope you can help me with this problem. Not really the problem, more an annoyance.

All the best. Bodo

I have to say I confirm this being an issue on my Android as well. Just today I signed up for the yearly plan after doing some research and finally going with Deezer. After reading about various topics, one such topic that I was paying attention within articles were how much mobile data was being used when the app was on such network. Currently i only have 4GB’s of data and figured that it would be enough for the short trips that i take within my car for errands and to / from work from the articles.

Took about an 3 hour errand run earlier today with multiple stops and when finally checking on mobile data usage, I was shocked to see that the program had used up 685mb of data in such a short period of time. Checking my carrier’s quota, it matched about the same, which was only reset 2 days ago (every 2nd of the month).

Like mentioned above, my settings are set to “Basic” for mobile data streams. Tomorrow ill test more as I have changed all quality settings to either “Basic” or “Standard” to see if that changes anything although it really shouldn’t.

Can upload pictures if needed of the usage or the articles of typical data usage is being mentioned.

So far I like the service and there's way around this “issue” but have the randomness of the songs  being played in app on the go is by far the best function to have. The only thing i can think of it, does the program download the whole song at the beginning of the song, or does it cache the song as its being played? Maybe due the amount of skips that I performed, that might explained the usage but then again did i play ~300 songs or at least that many skips?

Things I want to try out and see if it will make a difference

  • If possible, but trying to use the website side of things and see if that makes a difference
  • Just signed up for the BETA version of the Android App. Not sure on what version its on, but currently on 7.0.17.42 on stable. Looks like the newest beta version is 7.0.18.77
  • Turning off some or all of the “Ads and Analytics” options and seeing if that is pulling mobile data

Thanks,
