Signed up for us hi-fi premium through the settings app and my Apple account is linked to my email account. Both are the same but the subscription is not working. What’s the deal? Is it iOS 16 or something?

There may be problems with the bookings at Apple. Deezer recently introduced new subscription models in the US. HiFi is now included with Premium and Family.
I recommend you to cancel the booking. You can find the link to this in the confirmation email from Apple.
Then simply go to deezer.com via browser and book the subscription there. It's also cheaper than booking directly with Apple. 😉
