Compatible hardware (not a Smartphone)

Hi community,

 

I am looking for a hardware for my 10 years old son to enable him listening music with Deezer.

But I don’t want to give him a phone.

There are a few readers on Amazon, most of them (if not all of them) working with Android. I have tried one of them but the Deezer app was buggy and not very functional. After several back and forth with Deezer’s support, they finally gave up in making in works. I think the small size of the screen implies a different layout but they don’t want to support that because there is not enough users.

 

Do you know a simple hardware that works with Deezer and which is not a phone?

That’s a tough one. There are MP3 players out there, you could buy an older phone and not activate a data plan (wireless only), a portable CD player is an option, USB sticks can hold music. Without knowing what your situation and motivation is, I can only make these suggestions.

If it’s just a matter of monitoring his activity and access to the internet, a Google Pixel phone on a supervised (<13) account will give you an impressive suite of controls and oversight. A recent, but not the newest, model like the Pixel 6a is not expensive. It also gives you the benefit of knowing his location at all times, being able to reach him, and him being able to reach you or emergency services.

As he grows older (13) you can transition his account to reduced supervision. I know you said no phone, but I’m just making these suggestions in case that hadn’t been a part of your process. You aren’t going to have many other options.

Thank you for your reply.

Children are so easy with smartphones nowadays, whatever the brand or the OS.

If I take a real phone, it is gonna be a game of me building walls to restrict its use and him getting around them.

That is why the simplest hardware possible as a starting point already limits the things he could do.

As mentioned, some devices exist (amazon). They are like Android phones without SIM nor playstore and with a limited number of native apps. I just want to find one that works well with Deezer if somebody in the community knows one.
