Her first solo attempt was collaborating with Bryan Adams on a hit "When You're Gone". She then released her debut solo studio album, Northern Star in 1999, which sold four million copies.

Born in 1967 - Zakk Wylde


American musician Zakk Wylde, best known as the lead guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne and as the founder, lead guitarist, lead singer, songwriter and producer of the heavy metal band Black Label Society. In 2022, it was announced that Wylde had joined the reunited Pantera as a fill-in for original guitarist, and his close friend, Dimebag Darrell.

Born in 1948 - Ronnie Van Zant


Ronnie Van Zant, vocalist with Lynyrd Skynyrd who had the 1974 US No. 8 single 'Sweet Home Alabama' and the 1982 UK No. 21 single 'Freebird'. Van Zant died in a plane crash between shows from Greenville, South Carolina to Baton Rouge, Louisiana on October 20th 1977 along with bandmates Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines. Remaining band members survived, although all were seriously injured.

Nigerian-born British singer Helen Folasade Adu (Sade). She had the 1984 UK No.6 single 'Your Love Is King', and the 1985 US No.5 single 'Smooth Operator'. Diamond Life (1984) reached No.2 on the UK Album Chart, selling over 1.2 million copies and won the Brit Award for Best British Album in 1985. Sade was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2002 for services to music, and stated her award was "a great gesture to me and all black women in England".

English musician, singer and songwriter Paul Young who had the 1983 UK No.1 single 'Wherever I Lay My Hat' and the 1985 US No.1 single 'Everytime You Go Away'. He was also a member of The Streetband, (1978 UK No.18 single 'Toast', and lead singer with soul covers band Q-Tips in 1979 and early 80s.

Born in 1943 - Janis Joplin


American singer and songwriter Janis Joplin. Joplin rose to prominence following an appearance at Monterey Pop Festival where she was the lead singer of the then little-known San Francisco psychedelic rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company. She left Big Brother to continue as a solo artist with her backing groups, first the Kozmic Blues Band and then the Full Tilt Boogie Band. She appeared at the 1969 Woodstock Festival and on the Festival Express train tour. She had a 1971 US No.1 single with 'Me And Bobby McGee' and the 1971 US No.1 album Pearl. Joplin died on 4 October 1970 age 27 after an accidental heroin overdose.

Topped the UK singles and album charts simultaneously for the first time in their career when the single ‘Patience’ and album Beautiful World both reached No.1 in Dec 2006.

British singer and songwriter Billy Ocean. His 1984 single 'Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run) peaked at No.1 in the US and Ocean won the 1985 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for the song. He accumulated a series of international hit singles 'When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going' (1985 and the theme song for the film The Jewel of the Nile), 'There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)' (1986). In 1988, his single 'Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car' reached No.1 in the US.

Michael Hutchence, singer, songwriter from Australian rock band INXS, who had the 1988 UK No.2 & US No.1 single 'Need You Tonight'. Their 1987 album Kick has sold over 10m copies in the US alone and features four Top 10 singles; 'Need You Tonight,' 'Devil Inside', 'New Sensation,' and 'Never Tear Us Apart.' INXS has sold over 55 million records worldwide. Hutchence was found dead in his hotel suite in Sydney on 22nd Nov 1997 age 37.

American singer-songwriter Neil Diamond. He has had ten No. 1 singles on the US chart including 'Cracklin' Rose', 'Song Sung Blue' and 'You Don't Bring Me Flowers' and has sold more than 130 million records worldwide. Diamond wrote 'I'm A Believer', the No.1 for The Monkees. Many acts from Elvis Presley, Lulu, Cliff Richard and Deep Purple have all covered his songs. With his 2008 album ‘Home Before Dark’ Diamond became the oldest artist to have a US No.1, the record was previously held by Bob Dylan in 2006 with ‘Modern Times’.
