Ozzy Osbourne, legendary rocker and iconic "Prince of Darkness," passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the age of 76. A towering figure in rock history and a pioneer of heavy metal, Osbourne leaves behind a legacy that will echo for generations.

Prince of Darkness, as Ozzy Osbourne was known, is not longer with us. His family made the announcement public with these words: "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time."

John Michael Osbourne, known by his stage name Ozzy Osbourne, was born on December 3, 1948, in Marston Green, Birmingham, England. He was a pioneer and icon of heavy metal. Growing up in a working-class family with six siblings, he left school at age 15 and worked various jobs before dedicating himself to music.

Osbourne was one of the founding members of Black Sabbath in 1968, alongside Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. The band is recognized as a pioneer of heavy metal, thanks to landmark albums like Paranoid, Master of Reality, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, which profoundly influenced the genre. Ozzy served as the vocalist on nine studio albums with the band, standing out for his voice and dark style that defined Sabbath’s sound.

In 1979, Ozzy was fired from Black Sabbath due to issues related to his addictions and internal conflicts and was replaced by Ronnie James Dio. After his departure, Osbourne launched a successful solo career, also promoting young guitarists like Randy Rhoads and Zakk Wylde.

In his personal life, Ozzy was married to Thelma Riley and later to Sharon Osbourne from 1982, with whom he had several children, including the most famous Kelly and Jack Osbourne, known from their MTV reality show The Osbournes, which aired from 2002 to 2005.

After decades marked by health problems, including Parkinson’s symptoms, Ozzy Osbourne bid farewell to the stage in 2025 with a massive concert in Birmingham called Back to the Beginning. This historic benefit event reunited him with the original members of Black Sabbath and featured appearances from bands like Guns N' Roses, Pantera, and Metallica. This final concert marked the closing of an era for the heavy metal legend.

July 22, 2025, will be remembered as the day the world lost one of the most iconic and fundamental figures in rock and heavy metal history. He leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered forever and a story for both adults and young fans who enjoyed his music.

Thank you for your music, Prince of Darkness. You're now “Coming home with your mama on your Crazy Train. See you on the other side, our Iron Man and Paranoid Dreamer.”

And it’s worth sharing a couple of playlists to remember the music Ozzy leaves us.

I was fortunate to have seen him close to his prime (I consider Sabbath his prime). The biggest stage I saw him on was Heavy Metal day at US Festival ‘83.

The US Festival was after Randy Rhoads had passed in ‘82, with his band being Ozzy (vocals), Jake E. Lee (guitar), Bob Daisley (bass), Tommy Aldridge (drums), and Don Airey (keyboards).

Ozzy Osbourne's setlist at the US Festival in 1983, which took place in San Bernardino, CA, was nothing short of epic. He included a mix of his solo material and Black Sabbath classics. The setlist featured songs like "Over the Mountain," "Mr. Crowley," "Crazy Train," and "Suicide Solution". He also played Black Sabbath favorites such as "Fairies Wear Boots," "Iron Man," "Children of the Grave," and "Paranoid". The performance also included a drum solo by Tommy Aldridge.

Here's the full setlist:

Diary of a Madman (Introduction)
Over the Mountain
Mr. Crowley
Crazy Train
Suicide Solution
Revelation (Mother Earth)
Steal Away (The Night)
Drum Solo (Tommy Aldridge)
I Don't Know
Flying High Again
Fairies Wear Boots (Black Sabbath)
Iron Man (Black Sabbath)
Children of the Grave (Black Sabbath)
Paranoid (Black Sabbath)

Ozzy was a polarizing figure to be sure, but it cannot be argued that he surrounded himself with extraordinary talent and was a showman of iconic proportion.

I'm sure there was an increase in streaming of Ozzy songs, at least around the time he passed away.
We can't see it now, because trends change all the time, and I didn't pay attention to it before.
