The MTV Video Music Awards are back on September 7, with the show airing live on CBS. This year, all eyes are on Bad Bunny, the standout Latin artist who tops the list of nominations and proves once again why he’s one of the most influential Hispanic voices on the global music scene.

Throughout 2025, the Puerto Rican superstar cemented his spot as the most-streamed Latin artist worldwide, continuing to expand his legacy with his Debí Tirar Más Fotos era.

Four Key Nominations

Bad Bunny scored nominations in four major categories, including Artist of the Year—an award he already won back in 2022. His latest album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos, is up for Album of the Year, while the short film tied to the project earned a nod for Best Longform Video. On top of that, his hit Baile Inolvidable is competing for Best Latin Song, where he’ll be facing heavyweights like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Morgan Wallen, and The Weeknd.

Latin Representation at the VMAs

Despite the worldwide dominance of Latin music—breaking records in the U.S. according to the RIAA—its presence in top award categories remains limited, a situation similar to what artists in genres like K-pop also experience. Still, this year’s VMAs highlight several big names from the region. Joining Bad Bunny in the Best Latin Song race are J Balvin (Río), Karol G (Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido), Peso Pluma (La Patrulla), Rauw Alejandro & Romeo Santos (Khé?), and Shakira (Soltera).

The Spotlight on The Marías

One of the surprises this year comes from The Marías, who teamed up with Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco on one of 2025’s biggest viral hits, Ojos Tristes. Thanks to this track, the band is nominated for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Pop. Their lead singer, María Zardoya—born in Puerto Rico and raised in Georgia—brings a distinctly Latin identity to the group, further strengthening the community’s presence in the international music scene.

It's not my genre, but MTV is no longer as reliable as it once was.
