"The Lion Sleeps Tonight," famously recorded by The Tokens in 1961, was a #1 hit based on the 1939 Zulu song "Mbube" by Solomon Linda. Featuring a high falsetto, the Tokens’ version added English lyrics to the melody, which originated from South African isicathamiya music. "Wimoweh" is a corruption of the Zulu chorus "Uyimbube," meaning "you are a lion".

The song is widely known from its inclusion in Disney’s The Lion King franchise.
