 One-Hit Wonder Song

Mickey (1982) by Toni Basil

Toni Basil's "Mickey" (often referred to as "Hey Mickey") is a 1982 smash-hit pop song known for its iconic cheerleader-themed music video. Originally titled "Kitty" by UK band Racey in 1979, Basil reworked it, adding the famous cheerleader chant. It reached #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in Dec 1982, becoming a defining 80s one-hit wonder.

The music video was choreographed and directed by Toni Basil herself, featuring a Carson High School cheerleading squad. Basil famously wore her own high school cheerleader sweater from Las Vegas High School in the video.
At the time of the hit, Toni Basil was 38-39 years old, working primarily as a renowned choreographer for film and music videos.

What is a One-Hit Wonder?

A one-hit wonder is a musical artist or band that achieves significant, mainstream popularity with a single hit song but fails to replicate that success with subsequent work. While sometimes having other minor hits, they are primarily remembered by the general public for one defining, often highly memorable, popular song.

“Mickey” was one of my favorite videos on MTV, one of those that I would stop whatever I was doing to run and watch it when it started playing on TV.

Although Mickey's song and video was popular, Toni doesn't have many other songs released (at least not in the Deezer catalog). That's why she's a one-hit wonder because almost everyone has heard of that song.
