The song was a true emblem of the band, lasting for decades and taking on new meanings over the years.

β€œDon’t Look Back In Anger” was released as a single on February 19, 1996 and became the fifth track taken from the hit album What’s the Story Morning Glory? by Oasis, released in 1995. The song quickly established itself as one of the British band's most popular songs.

In an interview with NPR, Noel Gallagher, the song's composer, explained that the idea behind the song emerged as an act of personal resistance, particularly directed at a woman named β€œSally,” who sees herself looking back on her life without regret. β€œIt started out as a defiant song about this woman,” Gallagher said.

β€œHe sees the diary of his life metaphorically passing by and thinks: 'You know what? I don't regret anything. Raise a glass to that,’” Noel added, revealing that the song conveys a message of acceptance and empowerment, suggesting that regardless of past mistakes or poor decisions, one can move forward without feeling guilt or regret.

Likewise, in the same interview, he mentioned that the idea for the lyrics was influenced by a night out in which he visited a strip club. After that experience, he wrote the song, leading to curiosity about whether β€œSally” was a real reference to an exotic dancer he encountered that night.

Originally conceived as a song about not looking back with regrets, the song took on new meaning over the years, especially after the tragic events that marked the city of Manchester.

It became a resistance anthem after the terrorist attack that occurred on May 22, 2017 at the Manchester Arena, where 22 people lost their lives during an Ariana Grande concert. The song came to represent an act of collective defiance in the face of violence and fear.

β€œThat song is more important than I will ever be,” Noel said in an interview with Radio

β€œWhen I see teenagers in the audience β€” who were barely born when Oasis broke up, much less when we were together β€” that makes me think, wow: we did something that was special and timeless, that they have come generations later and still understand it,” confessed the artist who, during 2025, will once again form a duo with his brother, Liam, to embark on a world tour.

β€œIt's hard to put together a set list, because you're like, 'Am I done with that song? How many more times am I going to play it?’ You are kind of obligated to try it at least once. I don't think they'd let me leave the place if I didn't touch it. β€œIt's like my Hey Jude,” he said.
