Every year on September 17, we celebrate International Country Music Day, a tradition dating back to the 1950s. This date honours Hank Williams, one of the most influential country artists of the 20th century.

Country music, which began in the 1920s in the southern and eastern United States, has evolved, absorbing elements from other genres and creating subgenres like bluegrass, outlaw, and Nashville sound.

As songwriter Harlan Howard famously said, country music is "three chords and the truth." Its appeal lies in its relatable lyrics about everyday life, resonating with people worldwide, especially in the U.S. The genre typically features instruments like banjo, guitar, and harmonica, adding to its distinct sound.

Country Legends

  1. Jimmie Rodgers: Known as the "Father of Country Music," Rodgers pioneered the genre with his unique blend of yodeling and rural themes, shaping early country music, then known as "hillbilly music."

  2. Johnny Cash: Often called the "King of Country," Cash's career spanned five decades. His music fused country with gospel, rock, and blues, making him a household name and even outselling the Beatles with nearly 100 albums.

  3. Dolly Parton: The "Queen of Country," Parton is a Tennessee-born icon known for her timeless hits and her pride in country culture. Her influence extends across the globe, and she's an enduring symbol of Nashville's music scene.

Country Music Hubs

  1. Bristol, Virginia/Tennessee: The birthplace of country music, where the 1927 Bristol Sessions were recorded. This historic town hosts the annual Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion festival.

  2. Nashville, Tennessee: The heart of country music, home to the Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and iconic honky-tonks like Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge.

  3. Austin, Texas: Known as the live music capital of the world, Austin boasts over 250 daily performances and hosts major festivals like South by Southwest.

  4. St. Louis, Missouri: Alternative country was born here in 1990 when Uncle Tupelo merged traditional country with punk rock, sparking a new wave of country music.

Celebrate the heart and soul of country music today!  Whether you're a long-time fan or new to the genre (Check Deezer’s Country Channel here) , there's no better time to experience the magic of country music.

From heartfelt stories to timeless tunes, country music is more than a genre – it’s a way of life

I have to be in a kind of “mood” to listen to country.

In The Netherlands country isn’t that populair, but we have got Ilse de Lange. The most famous Dutch country singer. Some of her albums are recorded in Nashville, home of country music. Her singles and albums have reached the Platinum status.

Favourite numbers 1 and 2:

She also ended number 2 on the Eurovision Songfestival in 2014 with The Commom Linnets with:
